A little off topic and somewhat related

When replacing the valve cover gaskets on the M62 V8 motors, I would like to know how much sealant (ex: reinzosil ) is used on the surfaces prior to joining the valve covers to the heads. Is it a small dab all around the surface and then thin it out with your finger or maybe just where the corners are only?

Looking for suggestions and rule of thumb practice.

    Thanks.

Place a small amount at corners and where the timing cover casings join.

I put a small film all around.

Doing this again - I would replace all the rubber grommets around each nut. I would also make sure the mating surface is spotless. Lastly, I agree with Dragon on sealant all around.

Good call, Toomanyparts. Luckily, I did order the full set of rubber grommets as listed on realoem when I ordered the set of valve cover gaskets.

Never cover the whole surface. You just put a small dab and smear it with your thumb at the crease where the timing cover meets the head. Smaller than a dime. And then lay a thin coating on the half moons of the gasket itself. That’s it.
