I have an issue with my e36 that is gradually worsening. It's a sound that comes either off the diff carrier or the driveshaft itself, from what I can tell. The sound comes from the back of the car.
It is usually not present when the car is cold and usually comes up after beating on it or driving it around for longer sessions. Video gives a decent idea of the sound. It's sort of like a pop, or a punch. Sometimes a bit of a creakiness.
In the video what I am doing is letting the clutch out in gear with the brakes holding the car in place. Shift to reverse and do the same, and the noise becomes noticeable. The noise is also noticeable while driving in 2nd or 3rd, and abruptly letting off the gas, and then again when getting back on the gas.
My subframe and sheet metal in general is fine. Wondering if any experts can weigh in on this before I start poking around aimlessly.
Bump, post move.

Hey, I'm not a Tech or mechanic but I drive cars really hard and my diff was making a very similar noise on its last days before it broke... my wildassed guess would be that your diff is on its final days.. try check the joints on the drive shaft (prop shaft) and the half shafts. And just have a good inspection on your rear subframe, diff carrier and the bushings.
