I have a 1999 328i with 108k. I believe my TC is going out. There is a whining coming from the transmission and my RPM is not holding at speed. The acceleration has been bad and the gear changes are rough. The transmission is a GM 5L40. Where would be the best website or place to find a replacement TC.
Thanks!
The first thing to do is have the tranny computer (EGS) scanned for codes. What’s the maintenance history if the tranny? Have the fluid and the filter ever been changed? I recommend you get the car up in the air and check the fluid level ASAP! You may be low on fluid.
Scanned the car and there are no codes. Bought the car 3 months ago and do no have any history on the transmission. I do not believe the fluid has been changed. Was planning on getting that done within the next week. Worried if I change the trans fluid the TC slipping may get worse. I will definitely check as soon as possible to see if the trans fluid is low!
Thanks for the info.
What tool did you use to scan ref EGS? Are you going to change the fluid and filter yourself? If so check out the procedure on YouTube as the tranny’s temperature needs to be within a specific temperature range when doing the last fluid top off. I think Pelican Parts has the procedure, too.
Tgese trannies came filled with non-synthetic Dexron3 fluid. Many folks upgrade to a synthetic Dexron4 or 6. There’s a life of approved fluids in the E45Fanatics forum. Be advised that changing the fluid leaves quite a bit of the oil fluid in the tranny.
Good luck.
