'01 330ci, 140k...just did a cooling system refresh (radiator, expansion tank new hoses, new tranny thermostat) about 1k ago, Waterpump had already been replaced about 10k ago. Alternator was replaced about 6 years ago. Also recently charged the air conditioner. the car has developed a howling noise and it is occasional. when it does happen, you hear it at start-up and til about 20 mph then it goes away. so, I'm thinking either the waterpump, the alternator or the compressor? would appreciate any help... you guys have always been a great resource, and i need a little direction here
Secondary Air Pump/Auxiliary Air Pump
Should only operate upon cold start-up,
for a duration of about 30~90sec.
Manual or automatic transmission?
automatic. was hoping i'd hear from you!....you've help me so much in the past. thx.
I would assume the power steering pump.
Have you checked the reservoir for fluid level?
Inspected hoses for cuts or leaks at fittings?
that's a good bet. I did have to add a good bit of fluid. would a bad PSP make that type of noise? You start checking around at all the possible causes, and you realize just how much maintenience/prevent. is needed on these cars when they head for 150k
It does make the noise you described when pump is failing or low on fluid.
You having to top off fluid is verification of that, hopefully no damage was done.
Now it's time to find location of leak.
