I am about to purchase a '95 540i, but California Smog failed at a missing PCV. I checked the rear crankcase cover and it is indeed missing hoses to it. I don't know what hoses are supposed to be connected and from where. Can anyone provide pictures and diagrams in case I'm missing other components?
I suggest using the realoem.com website. Enter the Vin number and look up what you’re looking for. Site will show proper BMW part numbers for purchasing. Has diagrams also. I use it a lot. Good luck! George
Do the CA smog inspectors really know what is or isn't supposed to be on every car? The cretins performing these "tests" in Illinois barely can find the OBC connectors.
FYI, there are caps on some of the PCV ports from the factory as I recall.
If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
As mentioned above, the connections on the back PCV plate on these 540's are not used, but are capped off. On the E32 740's I believe they use the larger port for the brake booster, but since the 5 series has the brakes way up forward, they went elsewhere for the vacuum signal for it. If you failed only for visual, I'd go back and complain - they are wrong. If you failed for other reasons (actual emissions or CEL), proceed under the assumption of replacing all of the intake gaskets (a saturday afternoon job and around $200 ish for the good quality gaskets). There are threads about the intake part numbers and the process.
