I have had nothing but great luck with Hondas. I despise Nissan and Audi.

Heres what you do.
Buy a 1500 with a L33, swap in a 4l80 with a trans go 2 shift, circle D triple disc converter, borg s475. Make about 650whp (locked up) on right around 15psi.

Can't have a tow rig be slower than what it's pulling. That way if you break the car at the strip you can still talk trash..
For all of you advocating 1500s (other than dBurt), have you had good luck with the 4L60/5e transmissions when towing?
No ^
We have a pile of them at the shop. Mostly good.

Good 4L60s? :/
I'm not familiar with what in them breaks. I guess they must be mostly good other than the part that rendered them useless? Lol

Sure,
trannies are important for towing ability,
but I'd say quality brakes are as necessary.
I think my game plan is as follows;
So reason I'm looking for a new DD is cause my 99 Jeep Cherokee's 4.0 shit out on me the other day with 245k miles.
I think I am going to get a civic si or a TSX w/6spd as a daily.
And over the next 6 months I am going to build a 4.0 for the jeep and put a small turbo on it, maybe a Borg 52mm. Ill throw a trans cooler in it and it should do fine for towing my M3.
Why not just skip the T and go to the N.
10k dp and your golden
Just daily the e36 door a bit and build the jeep skip buying a Honda lol

I love my suburban. 03 1500 I got for $3500. I've put 40K miles on it in the last year and it's been very hassle free. Now has 250K on it. If I were single I would get a pickup but I need space for kids and a dog and stuff. Pickups are great, everyone should have one. Opens up a lot of opportunity to do stuff with being able to tow and haul things. I also have an 03 dodge cummins. Gas is expensive but I would much rather daily that than a car.
They are generally crap but work okay if treated with respect. The newer ones hold up much better than the older ones did. If you just limit the input power to like 150-200 hp when towing it will live. Just have patience and don't drive like a teenager while pulling 7k lbs. Keep it out of overdrive and use the tow mode button. I towed about a 3K lb trailer to Oklahoma and back, I've towed my boat to canada several times, towed my 5K lb fish house a few thousand miles, and this summer I pulled a 6K lb camper to Idaho and back through the mountains. Just have to be patient. If you were going to pull a trailer everyday for work or were in a hurry to get somewhere then absolutely get a 2500 with a 4l80e or a diesel. The newer 6 speeds are said to hold up well. They are 4l80e derived. My cummins with a 6 speed manual you can't even tell your pulling anything with 6K lbs

Thanks for the detailed info!
Do you know what usually breaks in the 4L6x stuff? As in, do you normally lose a gear, or normally dead in the water? Your towing examples definitely sheds some light on the fact that they aren't completely incapable of doing some work if treated somewhat carefully.
I used to beat 700r4s (and maybe early 4L60e) mercilessly at work pretty much every day in the 90s, and I don't remember one ever breaking. They were great fun to drive back then too with that 3:1 first gear and decent torque converter.
Skip the Honda and grab an e90 335 with a bunch of maintenance history while you work on the heep

These bad larry's usually hard shift into 2nd or 3rd or just start slipping. I've also seen them lose reverse only, and lose forward everything only lol. Mainly abuse and people not changing fluid for 150k. Or the new owner decides to do a trans flush on a 150k untouched trans and then finds it doesn't shift as well. Lucas Trans fix-in-a-can works wonders for these

Get a car you won't mod. Anything LS based is open to modding easily, lol. You will mod a Honda based car unless it's a hybrid. Save the money for the race car.

You can get a 335d for around $10k and it will tow 4000 lbs — an E36 on an Aluminum trailer or dolly. With tuning, they go pretty good. One member here daily drives his and it traps about 120 and is in the 11s.
