I just bought this car and don't really know the history. It has 57,000 miles. Any recommendations on services or parts I should replace?

Cooling system overhaul is the first priority. Buy ONLY cooling system parts made by the suppliers to BMW. Try fcpeuro and ECSTuning. Go to www.realoem.com and enter the last 7 characters of the car’s VIN. Hit enter and bookmark the page. Cooling system parts are in both the engine and the radiator sections. The cooling system needs to be fully drained. That means removing the block drain under the exhaust manifold. The new coolant needs to be a 50/50 mix of BMWcoolsnt and DISTILLED WATER.

    Welcone to the addiction.

+1 to everything Marco says, especially about the addiction! If you're in HB, you'll find that Pelican Parts is a great resource and your parts will land on your doorstep in one day. Here's a helpful hint - the blue coolant in the BMW jugs is actually Pentofrost NF, available at many auto parts stores (I find it at select NAPA or AutoZone stores), at a more reasonable price. Make sure you replace the two plastic coolant pipes when you do the refresh; it is best to remove the intake manifold to get access to them. And when you're in there, replace the air intake boots as well - they perish over time and you have to take them out to gain access anyway.
