Is the cable white mainboard or green?

These drivers here should be fine http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

But it depends if it's white or green.

White mainboard ones tend to be bricked by the newest ftdi drivers, because they contain counterfeit FTDI chips.

Windows version has nothing to do with it. XP is not needed. Win7-Win10 will work just fine.

Are ALL white board cables bad?? I just bought a new one off of Amazon that's white. One with a switch to jumper pins 7/8. Out of the box it was broken and I had to re-solder the wires to the pins from the switch. Pretty crappy quality overall.

All *Chinese* white board ones? It's possible, yes.

I was given a white board one by someone, and it works for a while, until the FTDI drivers erase the Hardware ID in the cable (VID to 0000), and then it becomes an unknown hardware item. There are ways to get it back to the correct VID and it works again, for a while.

Green board of about 10 years old is still functioning just fine. I'm sure the green board has a counterfeit FTDI chip as well, but the circuitry or something must not allow the hardware ID change.

Yes, that is a green board.

For the XP laptop you need this most likely http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM20824_Setup.exe
