    Question Dent repair....

So it happened... I was coming out of class and I see a fist sized dent right above the passenger side taillight which I'm assuming was caused by a van I saw parked behind me earlier.
It looks horrible and I want it fixed as soon as possible, rather than spend hundreds at a body shop, does anyone know of any ways to take a dent out? I'm not sure if a dent puller would work as the dent is narrow and rather deep. What'd I'd like to do is open up the trunk lid and see If I can push it out from the inside. Does anyone have any experience in this? thanks ahead of time

You can take off the trim on the inside of the trunk and use something like the handle of a hammer to hit it out from the inside. A few good pushes would do it. It wont be perfect but better than it is now for sure.

That’s right on the curve. Doubt that’ll come out.

If there's a crease, they can't do it. If it's a nice clean ding, I have used the edge of a screwdriver handle, right on the spot, inside of the dent off course,
you have to make sure you are on the dent, start massaging it, as you apply more and more pressure, running over the crest of the dent. If you do it right, you will literally see the edge of the tool you are using on the face side, working the metal, pressing it back out. I have actually done some of my own PDR with good results. I even ordered a couple of dent repair sticks, these are these 6 inch pen like sticks made of delrin. One is kinda sharp with a face area on the tip about an eighth of an inch, the other one has a rounder tip, about 3/16". You can use it like a pen, running it back and forth over the back side of the dent, as you apply more and more pressure, you will actually see the "tip", like I described earlier, on the face side. I have also used these dent sticks like a tap, where I tapped it gently with a body hammer. You don't want to over do it, if you do, now you are stretching the metal the other way. It is an art. Get some sheet metal, give it a ding, play with it. Use your imagination, you could use.... the back end of a Sharpie, what color? Choose one. Play with the dent, it's not that hard, but it's also not that hard to screw it up and over press the dent out, now you gotta work it back from the front side, It's ok, the pros do it the same way, they just have much more tools in their arsenal.

Here, check out their website, get an idea how they use the different tools, just by looking at a certain tool, you should be able to figure out how it is used. Hell, now I'm thinking of picking up a whole bunch of this stuff, maybe go get trained.... It is good money working with all the local bodyshops. Remember, it is an art, it is not that easy, some dents are harder than others.

I'm gonna see if I can get an in person estimate tomorrow, there's also a super slight dent on the right side of the body that was there before I bought the car, If I can get at least the big dent fixed for under $100 I'll do it, if not I'll try it myself by taking off the trim and doing what Snotty said. But I'd rather pay a fair amount for a professional result than have me f@#k it up

You can buy a dentless repair kit from Harbor Freight and use a heat gun or hair dryer to pre-heat the the dented area, then with the repair kit, you should be able to pop the dent out.

So the first place I went to told me it'd be impossible to do paintless dent repair bc they couldn't get in there, and they gave me an estimate of $1,000 to fix it with paint. I'll go to another place tomorrow, meanwhile, can anyone link me a tutorial or instructions on how to get inside the trunk lid? Because I'm sure it can be opened and I want to see If I can try myself

I don't think a good PDR guy can get that one, I used to work at a bodyshop, that's gonna be a regular autobody repair, $1000 is way off, unless that included blending both quarters and the rear panel. Toss that lid, find a used unscratched trunk lid in the same color, Titan Silver in your case, thats the most available color, dime a dozen, call it a day. I've picked them up for $100.

    Nice work.

The trunk panel is pretty tough on these E39s, but yeah, a good PDR guy should be able to get it.
