I know a 5 speed was an option on the 77 320i but I thought what you got was a dogleg.
Is it/was it possible for there to be an OD 5 speed in a 77 originally?
Dunno?

No, it's not possible. The OD didn't even exist yet.
It also wasn't possible to get a dogleg in a US model car. It was only optional for euros.
There's a date on almost all parts (you can easily see the one on the left side of the cylinder head). I'm sure there's one on the transmission somewhere.

That's what I thought. Haven't seen the car yet but.....hard to argue over the phone with someone who knows everything.
Ha! I know how that goes. It's no easier in person. But a 5 speed swap takes nothing away from a 77, in fact it adds some value. Make sure the 5th gear is actually there though and the seller isn't just full of hot air.
Yep, my '77 came with a 245 5-speed, but it couldn't have been original. The previous owner didn't know anything about it. It IS possible though, that someone with connections could get just about anything done. As long as the part existed at the time, that is.
