    Cool

I used a bolt and double nut thru one of the 4 flange holes with a 3/8" ratchet and socket to hold the flange still as I reduced the play to "0" and then to 22 in lbs all via my Ridgid Battery Impact Wrenchs 1/2 " drive with 1/2"- 30 mm Deep Socket, a couple minutes work. This is nothing new using impacts for this job its been going on like this for over 30 years that I know of. This was attached to Mister Gumby's excellent work on changing bearings out only on an LSD, which is in FAQ's, this rebuild is on open differentials so both sides are covered on changing out the bearings, races ,clamp bush, lock plate and seals, between the two one is in like flint, doing a rebuild on the renewing of bearings, I referenced Mr Gumbys thread early on post no 3.

The basic setup for Reducing play to Zero-0 and then set to 22 in lbs, using the in lb wrench to check turning torque to 22 in lbs, which arrives very fast after 0 play. The Differential was of course dry and nothing else in the differential housing , only the the pinion shaft and its seated races and bearings and the pinion shaft nut ,I set the open end of it on a towel and it was standing vertically as well nose end up, I have used both methods and I like this method better. Adjustable power with these Ridgid Cordless Impact Wrench's make dialing in 22 in lbs easier.

One further point on this Refresh or Complete Rebuild of these Differentials. You don't have to diagnosis the Rebuild for problems unless there is a problem. If your final turning torque is in specifications, your gear mesh will be specifications and run out will be in specifications. If it's Higher or Lower than specifications, then run out measurements, and the grease test will give information to locate the problem. Grease has to be removed completely by washing with a very good solvent, a thin oil layer is what protects metal to metal contact and the resulting fatigue if the oil does not flow off and on the surfaces. Grease will stop oil flow not improve it and absorb particles that gets crushed when the gears press together.

A bit out of the blue but how do you guys figure out what crush sleeve to buy?
    I'm considering rebuilding front diff on x5 2002 3.0 and I understand I need 168 sleeve.
Is it the same one that's used here?
I found this thread by googling Crush Sleeve for 168mm Differential

I can't imagine the X5 uses a 168mm but the crush sleeves are the same in lots of models and diff sizes. It's very possible it uses the exact same pinion crush sleeve for preload.

Looked on real oem and yeah they don't even show exploded versions of the diffs on newer cars ie "not serviceable" but we all know thats not the case.

Just google bmw crush sleeve and take your pick. If built a diff before it should be no different to setup.

If just replacing a pinion seal and not crushing a new sleeve then its approx. 110 ft lbs. Before removing the flange, make a mark across the nut to the flange and don't tighten past the mark or you'll crush the sleeve which will mess up the preload. Use some loctite when putting the nut back on.

If installing a new sleeve and bearings then will need a large vise or use the shop floor. Using a long breaker bar and cheater bar of pipe; steel jack handle to final tighten and approaching till obtain 22 in lbs of turning torque. It's way to easy to overshoot using a impact gun but can start crushing the sleeve with an impact first just to get it moving. When the gap of the assembly gets close I'd only use a manual method which takes quite a bit of force to do hence the long handles. Checking in between small movements like 1/8 turn. Using a in lb wrench that the pinion turns with 22 in lbs of force. It's a little back and forth a few times not to overshoot. If ends up on the tight side over 30 you'll tell when trying to turn the pinion by hand it's too tight and very crunchy; have to start over with a new sleeve.
