Hello,
I was told by my mechanic that my Navigation unit in the trunk is pulling 1.2 amps when the car is off. I have been having battery issues for a month or two. In essence the replacements on ebay are 400 dollars. Does anyone know of any other solutions there might be to this problem? Would buying an aftermarket navigation head unit still rely on the trunk navigation to display the screen? (I know that when its unplugged the screen goes black) Please let me know if anyone has any information.
The unit in the trunk is probably bad and is always on. It should go to sleep.

Depends, if it is 100% for sure the GPS drive unit and you have a 2001, then you have the MK3 navigation computer.
The MK3's are pretty cheap to replace.

The Buss system and the way things go to sleep, except when they don't, but it's hard to tell when they don't, can be madness. I had the radio, which is in the trunk, which is tied into the Nav, go intermittent. When the radio went on the fritz, I don't think the Nav worked, but it would at times drain the battery completely overnight. A refurbished, or was it used, or was it new, ebay, but in a BMW box, solved it. I'm not saying it's particularly related to your issues, but at the least I feel your pain. Seems like the key to knowing if it was going to go to sleep was the transmission indicator lights would stay on.
