Someone who uses one of these on a Z4 or other BMW (newer than a Z3) recommended this:

They don't have a specific Z3 model now, but are promising something here:

This has been a public service announcement.
Ultimate Cupholders have been saying that for over 5 years that I know of, yet they still haven't produced one for the Z3 yet.
I finally bought the Z4 version and modified it to fit my Z3 by adding a sheet metal "foot" that raises the cupholder about an inch.Passenger Side.JPGDrivers side.JPG
The passenger side foot has a hole in it so it can be secured by the button that holds the mat. The driver's side has to be moveable forward and backward for either my wife or me, so it just tucks under the mat and can be slid one way or the other. It is certainly secure and it holds a water bottle under my knee while driving, so you don't even notice it is there unless needed.

LeatherZ is now producing new OE style cup holder bases. They didn't have them the last time I looked.
I have one from Leather Z too. I never use it because (1) it's too small for most containers; it's perfect for a soda can, but most coffee cups and water bottles are bigger than that, and (2) any container in the cup holder interferes with shifting the manual transmission.

I use this from Dude Gadgets. Fits along passenger seat and works great. I also have the Leather Z unit but, as others note, it doesn't fit many containers
