I have an automatic 1995 540i. Just replaced the transmissions because it the housing was cracked and it wouldn't start. Now it will move but I think it skips over first gear. I can get it to roll as if not engaged and then it catches. Any ideas on what the problem is?

Did you fill the ATF as per instructions? http://www.europeantransmissions.com...MWtechinfo.htm

Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
Do you mean it starts off in second instead of first or there is a delay/slip when you put it in drive? As Shogun says, first make sure it is filled correctly. Then double check you have adjusted the shift cable and that what you see in the cluster reflects the shift lever and mode switch postions
This sounds like the classic 5hp30 "valve body flaw" issue - it feels like it's powerbraking from a standstill for a few seconds, then it just lets go and accelerates normally? If so, do a subforum search for "valve body flaw" and it'll come up - it's something specific to early cars that had the 5hp30 transmission (540's and E32 740's). Can be fixed yourself as long as the reverse drum hasn't gone boom yet (you know because you wouldn't have reverse). I'll link a rebuild thread for the valve body when I find the one I did...

*edit* Here's that link to the thread I was talking about...
