    My INPA Works!!! But.....

So last night I finally decided to sit down and set up an old laptop I had to use for diagnosing my car. When I ordered my cable off Ebay I didnt notice I ordered one from china which means the CD with install instructions was in Chinese. Luckily with a little research I was able to find a plethora of information and other downloads with a more up to date version of the BMW tools. I decided to use the download off Bimmergeeks.net since the drivers associated with Mikes Easy BMW tools kept failing to download. Long Story short I got everything to work and was ready to pull codes from my vehicle.

So prior to hooking INPA up to my car I had four codes from the generic reader. P0171, P0174 Lean Codes , P0492,P0491 SAP Codes. These codes have been a constant pain and since it is so cold where I am and the car runs and idles smoothly, I will wait until it gets warmer to diagnose.

INPA Read 4 Codes as well 228,227,245,246 which I am assuming are the same. I say assume because...... you guessed it, its in German. I also had 7 shadow codes which included the four codes i mentioned and three new codes (90,91,92) However, the three additional codes say the "error frequency is 0".

After I disconnected INPA the SES light was off and I never hit clear codes. Not sure what happened. I drove the car about 10 miles but codes haven't come back yet.

Could someone please tell me WTH Im looking at with all the green bars that show my car running lol. What should I be looking for to help me diagnose things? How do I get Inpa (version 5.0.6) To give me english read outs. Some of it is in English but not all, or is there a glossary out there that tells you what the codes are that Im not finding?

INPA seems like a great tool but it scares me. Normally, I don't mind randomly clicking stuff to see what it does but I definitely do not want to do that here...lol

Isn't INPA fun. You are correct that the P-codes match the BMW-FC codes. The other three codes are not in the Bentley and I am assuming they are related to other modules. I prefer PASoft for my diagnostics and coding even though I have at least half a dozen different programs to choose from including two different versions of NCSExpert. If you are interested in PASoft here is a link that contains the tool and software. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008RHJTS2

Here's another one of mine, and you can see it's all in English.

I'm using INPA 5.0.6 too, and since I have a bit of a strange setup (INPA, NCS Expert, Tool32 are running on a virtual machine (pretends it is windows 98) which is run on my Macbook Air),I happen to face the same issue as you.

The worst case scenario is just having google translate on your phone to figure out what they mean. That's what I did.

It's a good way to learn German!

There's an English language pack on some INPA installs out there. I ran through the process a while back. Google was my friend IIRC.

Yeah at some point if you update your files, even if everything else is English, the E39 (and some other chassis) error codes will get overwritten with German ones. The error code text is all binary compiled into those files so you can't even just Google translate a .txt file or something. The solution seems to be use older data files and never update , unless someone has a pointer to updated English data for E39... I've not had luck and I've downloaded and tried loads of "daten" updates. But I don't mind reading German and Google translating either, as mentioned it gives you some practice with recognizing German Automotive terms...
