There are so many E39 options that look so much better on an E34 IMO. E39 wheels can be used without spacers or fender rolling in most cases as long as you stay with E39 OE sized tire combinations. Just pick up some aluminum hub rings for $10 and you're good.
I have E36 fitment Dinan Fikse 17x8 wheels on my E34 M5 and have 20mm spacers rear and 15mm front, 255 40 17 Hankook Evos all around. The rear fenders are rolled a bit to allow that to work and it's still tight, less than 1/8 inch. I'm using a Koni/Dinan set up on this one. I cringe every time I change tire brands because as we all no all identical tire sizes are not created equal. On my E34 touring I originally had E39 M5 fiment wheels (18x8/18x9.5) but went with stock staggered E34 M5 18" fitment tire sizes, 235 40 18/265 40 18 and had no clearance issues at all. The latter was set up on Koni/H&R. I didn't like the ride with 18" wheel/tire setup and went to E39 17x8 Style 66 wheels, 235 45 17 all around instead. Much better ride this way.
If you insist on using the E46 M3 wheels you'll need spacers and some trial and error with tire sizes, especially if you're lowered. Up front you'll probably need a 20 or 25mm spacer, the rears will probably be ok, but you could also use a 5mm spacer to get closer to E34 OE offset. Again desired tire sizes do factor into what you'll need.
