Exclamation Timing Guide Failure - Poll

I have seen a LOT of threads about timing guides, when to, should or shouldn't do, etc..

So how about a poll for at least the current members.

    Five simple, straight forward answers.

If you HAVE done them, what mileage did you do them at, and WHY did you do them. If you haven't, how long are you going to wait if you plan on doing it?

    Etc..

I haven't done them yet, but plan to do it myself. Car currently has 102k miles on it so I'm planning to slowly accumulate parts and tools as well as familiarize myself with the process before actually going through with it.

Done, at 154K. Purchased with shot guides and engine disassembled, classic 'basket case'. Po had already purchased ALL necessary parts,
    just never attempted the repair.

    Next change at 250K.

I have not done mine on either M62TU car I have. 135k on 2001 740, 175k on 2003 540i. Fantasize about replacing every gasket, rubber and plastic bit, and doing all the things on both "one day". Dropping pans in spring at next oil change to have a-look-see. That might bump the urgency up. Otherwise will do them re-actively if/when they go. Vibe i have is that they could go at any time, or not in my car-life-time, but more often than not, when they do its not catastrophic if you react fast and park it/tow it.

Over 235k when I did mine and they didn't actually need to be changed. No failure here. Around 40k since.

155k, going to wait until they make noise. Inspected when I changed the valve cover gaskets and saw no cracks or missing bits.

Just bought my 2001 740i with 165k miles and guides haven’t been done. So I’m interested in this poll too.

Anyone have the parts list for doing guides and anything else you should do while you are in there?

    ASC,

You can't see damage well enough just from the valve covers removed. best way, and it isn't fool-proof, is to remove the engine oil pan and see if there is any TCG debris. debris may be present even without much in the way of catastrophic noise. noise is a partner clue to debris in pan. if debris found stop driving.

anyway, you may be fine, but when it comes to TCG failure, it is nearly impossible to know when it will occur. so if into the engine then could do proactively.

You may push yours to limit by tracking the car. just listen for rattle and shut it down fast, you may not have much time!

Guides done at 178k, now at 211k. Next time they go engine will be scrapped and a lower mileage engine sourced.

Done at 135k as part of engine swap. Now at 211k. Theoretically they go again at 260k or so.

One of my E38 just had Catastrophic TCG failure at 237K miles. The other car (1999 740iL) has 121K. I doubt they have been done. I bought the car with 94K.

Although the design of the M60 is different and much more robust, it is my understanding that there are still TCG that can, and do, fail, just not at the frequency as the M62 engines.

someone correct me if I am wrong and/or elaborate if you have more details.

Replaced mine at 112K miles due to start up rattle and a piece of V rail found in the oil pan. Now at 136K and all is good and quiet. (Replaced Vanos as well)

the m62 uses one guide rail from the M60 on the V, these rarely fail.

The issue is the center u-guide being used to replace an actual sprocket.

Got one with guides done but not sure when (car has 138k on it now). The other car has its original guides, has 181k miles and runs silent (for now).

Done my TCG including tensioner and many gaskets at around 260k (kilometers) before they had the chance to hit me unexpectedly :-D
The chain was slightly longer! The guides look ok but no one can see when they will collapse.
I also did my VANOS with new rings and the press procedure too.

Starting the engine is now really smooth and not that noisy as it was before.

Not done, 186k. No preventative maintenance plans on this. Will definitely do in house as labor cost would be a killer.

Done at 172k due to severe timing cover seals leaking and OSV FAILURE. Guides appeared to be in good shape upon exam.30k since done.
