    Question 1998 328is hesitation high rpm

    Hey guys I've been searching through the forums but can't seem to find a symptom similar to mine. Hoping someone may be able to help shed some light on what's happening. Have a 98 328is autotragic with 86,000 miles. M50 manifold, asc delete, silicone intake boot, cai, new spark plugs, m3 rear section exhaust. Before intake and manifold upgrades car still had this slight bog down in upper rpm. I was thinking it was just the typical 328 manifold where the motor just runs out of steam during high rpm driving from being choked down. Obviously not the case. Smoked my intake system to look for leaks and no leaks detected. Cleaned the maf and no change. Had a tiny crack in valve cover so replaced and resealed. Still the same -_- Anyways, that's a little info about the car. So what happens in the first two gears it accelerates pretty solid and then 500ish rpms right before redline i get a slight hiccup. Really tiny but you can feel and hear it. Now once I am in 3rd gear which is much longer the real symptom that I'm curious about happens. Under wot at about 70-85ish the acceleration feeling slows down and can audibly hear it then around 85 starts to pull again then of course around 500 rpm before redline it will have that slight hiccup again. that 70mph range feel as if you are flooring it and then letting off throttle to about 70% throttle and then laying into it again around 80-85mph. don't feel this hesitation/power loss in the first two gears as they are much shorter. Don't know if I explained well but I'd really like to figure out what this is. Yes I know autotragic.. but there are no slips or leaks anywhere and at any other time the vehicle drives well and smooth. Don't even believe it's tranny related unless it's just due to the long 3rd gear that kind of drags on which allows you to feel the vanos adjustment at that rpm? Hoping someone had a similar experience or knows what direction to start digging in. Thank you!

    Could be fuel related, how old is the fuel pump and filter?

    Vanos issues are usually poor power in the lower rpm range, so I don't think its related to your issue. Another possibility is an ignition coil showing its age.

    As far as I know it is the original fuel pump and filter. Is there a simple way to test the ignition coils you suggest? When I pulled them physically, they looked good. Grounds were good and clean. No white powder or any type of deterioration.

    Fuel filter should have been replaced twice by now.

    I can only assume the previous owners have changed it during routine intervals. I'll start with that to be certain it's done. No dtc present at this time. I'll scan it at work tomorrow and see if there is anything stored.

    Recorded a video this morning to give you an idea of what happens. Haven't been able to scan for anything yet. Do have a fuel filter on order since it probably needs replacing regardless if it's related or not.

    Toyo proxi 215/45r17 front and 245/40r17 rear on type 68 wheels.

    1998 328is hesitation high rpm

    Check the overall diameters. Front and rears should be very similar diameters.
    Proper E36 front tire is 225/45-17 matched with 245/40-17 rear.

    After watching the video I think it may be a trans issue. Either the torque converter or the solenoid.

    Diameters seem to be really close with rear being slightly larger. Checked for codes at work today and nothing. Replaced my fuel filter while I had the car on the lift. Took it for a good drive after work. Brought it to same speed as the video and is the same thing. Something else happened today driving to work when I'm coasting down hill or letting off the gas to roll for a bit as I adjust my speed driving it feels like it goes out of gear. Rpms drop like it's in neutral for a second, catches again and rpms return to whatever they should be at for given speed. Thinking you may be right with it being a transmission issue. Especially seeing how everything else so far seems to be operating okay. I guess it's a good thing I picked up a 5 speed tranny and misc goodies to complete it two weeks ago. Now just need a couple days off to swap it in. That would be great if it fixes this weird power loss issue. Definitely don't feel like wasting money on the auto. Would be two birds with one stone if the problem goes away after.
