How Many Miles on Stock Bottom End with Turbo?

    Hi everyone,

I’m looking at buying an Uber-clean turbo e36 m3 (previously forum member owned) and was curious about one thing...

The car has maybe 35-40k boosted miles on it on the stock bottom end. Only internal modifications to the motor would be the MLS head gasket, copper o-ringed block and ARP head bolts.

It is running somewhere around 450-500 at the crank. Map 1 is likely somewhere around 430-450 and up to 500 on map 3.

My fear is after 40k boosted miles I’ll be the guy ending up with the short end of the stick and have an expensive failure somewhere....am I just being paranoid?

Inform me either way! This will be my first boosted car so I have a lot to learn!

No, your concern is a good one. And the motor is now about 20 years old. It might be fine for a while longer. You can do a compression leak down test.

Whats the original mileage on the motor?

As p said definitely do a compression and leakdown before considering anything.

The motor has 108k on it now, and it's been boosted for the past ~40k miles, which is actually somewhere around like the past 10-11 years.

I will check and see if we can get a leakdown and compression test going..

That is fairly low miles for the motor but fairly high for a mls gasket. Are you sure the block is o-ringed?

Yes I am positive. The MLS gasket is newer. Maybe 20k miles on it.

If you don't mind possibly having to fix something on it then buy it. Just be aware theres always a chance for failure. Id be worried about the turbo too.
