Very nice. Wish we could even find E30s in our pick and pull. Its all 5s and 7s and anything after 2000.
I forgot all about the 1/2 off sale. If I went I would just be looking over whatever else is there that may be interesting, to pull parts off of for possible resale. Dups makes a killing doing that.
After a little cleaning. E21's are getting rarer at Pick n Pull here as well. From realoem it shows this differential will fit 3' e21's from 75 -83 yr models.

There is a lot of that going on,, you see on it on ebay, pullers / resellers. One reseller is selling ring and pinion gear combos so you can move the ratio around eg- 3.9 to 3.64 and so forth in these 168mm cases. 168 mm lsd pumpkins are around too, yet have too search around.
50% sale On thru Monday, 12th-`15th.

Good purchase Randy, but I sold my extra open diff for $40. It was from a car with 180K miles on it.
Did that picked over e21 in Sac still have the climate control panel? Probably not. But if it did, it is grabable and re-saleable! Don't break it while removing.
I remember it being dead. The interior of that car had seen better days. And the wiring. And the fasteners. It was a trainwreck 'is' with a remarkably intact driveline

Evidently the LSD that came with it was exchanged out for an open differential at some time prior to selling to pick n pull.
Randy
It was broken out and trashed. This 3rd member turns smooth, I could trade it for a good 3.64 to a track or autox racer as 3.9 in these wind up the motor faster. , The CV axles are sitting there . Ebay has these differentials for sale at $200 plus.. There are 168mm lsd pumpkins out there as well, the best being the all gear one out of England,Quaife, never having to change the friction plates out again..

Thanks for the tip Randy. I finally signed up for the toolkit rewards myself. For some reason I thought there was a membership fee and thats why I never did it before.
Anyway woke up this morning and made sure to not hit snooze a dozen times. One stop in San Jose South and I got a rear plastic bumper for my E30 that is missing. As well as some M10 goodies from a '84 E30 318i; M10 EFI intake manifold and fuel rail (one day megasquirt, one day). As well as the oil pump. The oil pump should be the same as the E21 according to RealOEM and its super easy to take out with the E30's 2 part oil pan.

9am and it still looked like I was about to walk into Jurassic Park.

lol Jurassic park ,Sure,No fees to be a tool kit member, after so many points pick n pull gives you a $20 credit , I'm 100 points from my second $20 credit. I was out there to check out the oil pan and oil pump,,yet when I got wind of the Differential I canned that idea as I'm getting in a few rebuild parts for the oil pump in there now,,more on that later.
Good Finds

That's not exactly correct. But the late model one can be adapted to any year. The 2002 guys have perfected this procedure so they can use our LSDs. 77-78 is similar to a 2002 diff, and 79 has the newer style but in the old 3.64 ratio and with unique CV axles.
I dunno why you'd pay $50 for an open diff. Should be able to find free ones from the guys that swap to LSD.

The fitment is what realoem shows ,they fail to mention there is more than one side shaft there , yet do list them in trailing arm section and which ones are exchangeable . I dont see any available free Differentials. The only question is whether a solid spacer is available or crush sleeve is all thats available and price difference. I have all parts sourced. Neglecting the differential bearing wear is another parasitic power loss to the wheels. This differential or 3rd member is on tab for rebuilding a new, I'm not in a hurray. lol

Anyone is getting CV axles if they are not broken/damaged? I am looking for a good used set to change boots on and swap...
Thanks,
Max

I just finished up purchasing the seal kit for this differential, BMW Number for the kit is 33101203002 $101- 130 Got this kit number from FAQ's,, Which includes 2 side seals, 1-Pinion gear seal, one gasket(back plate) and 2 o rings and 2 Al crush washers for the drain and fill holes.
I purchased the kit for about 1/2 price by sourcing parts individually and upped the ante on the o-rings to Viton 75 from Buna. Pelican parts has the bmw pinion seal for $12,,bmw brand--2 left. Pictures later, the orders are being filled. Whats left is the crush sleeve or solid sleeve and the bearings.

33101203002 Seal Kit, No Aluminum Crush Washers in this Kit, may have been a addition.

Max the 50% sale is off now, I called pick n pull and they are called rear dead axle without brakes pick n pull inventory # 435-4, $64 + $10 + taxes + yard fee each. Bavarian auto recyclers has parts and does shipping.
Randy
I've sometimes corrected them on how to charge parts. Always a good idea to search online for the part before you go or on your phone in the yard before paying: http://www.picknpull.com/part_pricing.aspx
For example that intake manifold they wanted to charge as "Manifold-Intake Compos" for $44 but they also list a "Manifold-Intk 3/4Cyl Bare" that is $27 and a better fit for the part.
For a CV joint / half shaft I would tell them at the register "Axle Shaft (Solid Type)" for $37. Or you can even try "Axle C.V. Stub (Joint)" for $26. Also depends on how knowledgeable the cashier is.

yes thats more like it, its a cv and I told her that over the phone and she said pick n pull policy cannot quote prices over the phone,, $37 or $26 sounds more like it.. I got mine at half off in a sale some time ago $20 each. There is no spindle with these..most likely $37 each..plus tax , yard fees,,~$40 each out the door.

Oil Pump Rebuild is not that difficult, you check the spacing between the inner and outer rotors, I have done this on these pumps with well over 100 K miles and they are still in specifications new, then change the pressure relief oil spring and two o-rings,,when the spring gets weaker oil pressure goes down, the two o-rings seal the oil pump and its relief line thru the pressure hose assembly which on top of it has the second seal, sealing the engine oil gallery to it, if these o-rings which are silicone get old oil will seep thru here and oil pressure will be lost here.
The oil pump chain is another area-it should tight so that it takes thumb pressure to get it too depress ,, all in all these 4 areas getting aged will cause parasitic oil pressure loss, having these new or in specifications keeps oil pressure up to specifications.
the silicone o-rings and pressure relief oil spring are most often overlooked and should not be.

DSCI0190.JPGDSCI0191.JPGDSCI0192.JPG
The white and red o-rings are for oil pump pressure hose assembly tube and are silicone, the ones below Black are Viton 75 and same size as Silicone O-Rings, to the right is oil pump piston spring which maintains oil pressure, lower left is the circlip for the bottom of the oil pump pressure relief tube and above it is the thin washer which shims up pressure up about 5 psi from other threads about it and to the right of these is the piston in the pressure relief tube of the oil pump that blocks and allows motor oil around it to be recycled thru the straw to the oil pan from the oil gallery system.
My differential seal kit all have orders shipped be in this week.

Here is a thread here that has good information on doing a bearing and seal refresh for open and lsd differentials.
