I bought a 2014 328d about 1.5 yr ago and love it.
I am still trying to figure out the DEF tank capacity.
I was going on a 2500 mi vacation and had put about 8k miles on it and had not added DEF yet. (I figured the BMW dealer I bought it from topped it off before selling.)
So I topped it off with Peak DEF, using the include spout. I could not find the capacity anywhere, but it overflowed after putting about 3 - 4 liters in.
Well, about 5000 mi later, my 1000 mile DEF warning light came on.
This time, since the light came on, I planned to measure how much the tank holds.
Using a clean 2L jug, funnel and patience... I added 11.5L! It did not overflow, but the change in gurgling sound made me stop.
So... I assume my first "fill" did not come close to filling the tank. I probably poured it in quicker than the car could handle.
My plan for future fills is:
1. Wait for the light to come on.
2. Put a full 2.5 gal (9.5L) container of DEF in.
Two questions for the forum:
1. Does 11.5L sound about right for a fill after the warning?
2. Suggestions for improvement on my planned process.
Thanks,
John
The active tank is 8.7Liters. The Passive tank is 9.4Liters.

Thank you for that information. Very Helpful!

I am a newbie to this. My light just came on so I want to fill the fluid. Can you tell me:
-does the brand of DEF matter?
-how much DEF should I add?
-does the fluid come with appropriate funnels?
-how do I know whether it is actually full, as opposed to not able to take in in quickly enough?
Other tips?
Thanks.
Paul
Hi Paul
From my internet research, all ISO approved DEF is the same.
I feel better buying from a sealed container like PEAK Blue DEF in the 2.5 gallon size, which is just under 10L. It comes with a filler spout. Truck stops sell it in bulk.
BMW sells DEF in a container that prevents overflow. Maybe 2 L.
Floydf has capacity for the two tanks listed.
I was able to get 11.5 L in when the light came on. I poured it in through a funnel in 2 L steps. Maybe that is why I was more successful the second time. I stopped when the gurgling got loud.
Others bought one BMW container, and used it as a self-stopping filler funnel.
I washed any overflow off the paint and fill area.
I hope this helps.
John
BMW offers a 2.5 gal jug and a .5 gal top-off bottle.
I think that the passive tank is something like 4.5 gallons (way more than Floyd stated. 9.4L is only 2.5 gal-ish). I think the active tank is right around 2 gallons, though.
