I've been trying to diagnose an issue with my 85 318i shaking when I go over 55 mph. I just got an alignment and most of my suspension is replaced. When I drive around town it doesn't shake at all but for some reason when I drive over 55 my car shakes. I know there are probably a number of issues but if someone could give me a list of things to check out that would be great.
If your sway bar links or sway bar was bad, it would be making a horrible noise over the smallest of bumps.
Shaking is usually attributed to bent/out of round wheels or unbalanced wheels. Having a balance done would tell you if the wheel is bent or just needs a balance.
Since you say you replaced most of your suspension, double check every nut and bolt to make sure it is tight.
A warped rotor would also cause a shake when the brakes are applied.
I would also agree with the Bent wheel theory.. I have run into this a few times myself, and a couple of times it was do to wheel weight being lost.
Another potential issue with vibration is aftermarket wheels. Some of them are a bit picky with how you bolt them on to get them correctly centered.

Another possibility is a thrown weight off the drive shaft. Maybe worth checking drive shaft to see if you have any clean shinny spots.
