Fuel pump removal procedure (DIY)

Was wondering if there's a DIY write-up someone has done on pulling and replacing the fuel pump under the rear passenger seat. Wanted to study it and ensure I have all the parts before tackling the job.

If you do a search on here you will find some. From what I remember you just need the fuel pump assembly, a new ring/seal and probably some new fuel hose. I was able to get my fuel clamps undone using a 1/4 drive and an extension and universal joint but a couple are a challenge. One write-up said they had to drill a hole to be able to get to the clamp loose but I didn't have to. The other thing is using a piece of wood to loosen the ring holding the pump unit in.

This is the BMW Tool that removes and installs the fuel pump retaining ring. You need to be sure that it is FULLY seated or you will have a leak.

That looks like a one off custom made tool, TxGR8White. Where would I find something like that? Any chance I can loan/rent from you?

This is the tool I bought, CTA 2491. You need one with shoulders to clear the hose and electric fittings. Some people just use huge channel lock pliers.

Thanks for the tips 53helofe. I have a brand new pump assembly waiting to be installed. Just been too busy and haven't gotten around to it, but, figured it's time to do that now.
I'll study the parts diagram and start pulling the seat out to see what's what down there. It's was leaking fuel every time I had the tank more than 3/4 full. Pump finally died on me right around November of last year.

I don't think the fuel lines or carriers had ever been replaced on my car because the lines still had oem crimped clamps on them. So I drilled access holes to remove and replace them.

The tool to remove the fuel ring is used on many of the BMWs and Minis so there must be someone in your vicinity that would have one you could borrow.

I called AutoZone and they stock a loaner tool for the BMW fuel tank ring. My local store had two of them in stock. You just have to put down a deposit to borrow it.

Here's mine. First I just used one of those rubber strap wrenches, but that was a pain in the butt. When I looked for the proper tool, it was just too pricey (I think it was over $50, but I don't really remember). Found this bowl at Walmart for .99 cents, cut some slots on the table saw, and a hole to stick an extension through. Fit perfectly and worked great.
