    cost of installing tie rods.

I recently moved to this location and I am trying a new mechanic. He says I need new tie rods and wants $590 to replace with new ones. Considering the price of tie rod parts this seems excessive to me.

Any one have a comparison price. Am out of line?

What exactly? Both outer and the center tie rod? http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Mainte...ering_link.htm
approx. Material prices based on aftermarket parts prices
    BMW Steering Tie Rod Assembly Front - Rein 32211135668 $35.00 x 2 = $80
    "..................." " Lemfoerder per piece $40 x 2 = $80
BMW Center Drag Link Tie Rod - Moog 32211138850 $90.00
    or
BMW Center Drag Link Tie Rod - Febi 32211138850 $70.00

so roughly $200 in parts if you buy online, shop price? + labor cost per hour?

Shogun it is for the outer tie rods only. The price is for purchase and instillation. . . . center was already done. So basically $80 in parts and $510 in labor sounds expensive to me.

That is a bit expensive, you can do that DIY without a pit or lift.
    •Ratchet and socket
    • new self locking nuts
    •Front wheels adjustment needed

Use a jack to lift the concerned side, secure it with stands.
Remove the wheel, loosen the inner and outer bolts.
Use the tie-rod puller to remove both tie-rods then install the new one and tighten the bolts.
It's time for a front wheel alignment

Time required maybe 1 1/2 hours

    Hi Shogun;

At my weight and two titanium hips jacking up a car and working on it on the ground upside down most likely is not the smartest idea I would ever have. LOL I do thank you for the idea though.

Well, then you have to find a shop. But I have no exact idea how much that costs in Florida where you live. Also consider the cost for the checking and adjustent/alignment of the front wheels after these parts were changed. For that a good shop here charges already around $100.
Ask once more in the regional forums if someone can recommend a shop in your area https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/f...ons-amp-Events

Call around to a BMW dealer and that will give you the most expensive option and also ask the labor rate and number of hours. Since you can find parts (of varying qualities) you will have some idea of those costs. BMW dealers also have on line parts sales. Indy place labor rates I have found are about 75% of the local dealer. You could do better of course.

Thank you all for your replies. I found another very reliable shop to install them for a more affordable price.
