My wife's 1994 325i seats recline only a few degrees; stiill very upright. The motors make noise, but little happens. Are they supposed to recline to almost flat? I read about the white gear fix and can do it myself, but want to make sure they are intended to fully recline. It seems like a stupid question, but I want to make sure. The fact that they are both about the same makes me wonder. I've searched and found lots of info, but no picture or statement that answers my question. Thanks.

They're probably both bad, they should recline almost all the way to the back seat. Make sure you get the correct gear color!
I recently did my drivers seat and got a brand new one off ebay that turned out to be badly formed, should never have been sold, and the seller was an A-hole.

I assume you mean the gear was "badly formed". I read a few places that Odometer.com is the place to go for the gears, about $40 apiece.
They're cheaper on ebay, just gotta find a quality seller.

Just having gone through this the answer is they recline all the way back, however there is a catch. The seats recline more the further forward (towards the front of the car) they are set at. this is so they don't hit the rear seat when they are all the way back.
