What's up guys just got my 3rd e36 and plan to keep this one for quite a while. At this point I want to turbo it. I have some questions and I'm always looking for suggestions. My plans for the car are to make ~400 whp.
I'm still undecided on the manifold I'm going to run but wanting to run a topmount setup.
I have access to hx35s no problem and was thinking about running one.
Custom intercooler piping and a adequate fmic.
Tial waste gate and hks Bov.
Going with arp studs and a cutring and spacer Head gasket.
And for a base tune I was thinking of going with a war chip.
This will all be done on 91 octane. So I need some recommendations on will I need an oil cooler, best way to set up feed and drain lines. And any other tips and tricks you guys can think of.

Don't get the war chip. No oil cooler needed. Drill and tap the pan for a 1/2 npt fitting. Oil feed can be taken off the vanos bolt with a special fitting

I have a rally road vanos bolt for oil feed for sale. New. I think there like $30+Shipping. You can have it for $15 Shipped :-)
Why shouldn't I go with the war chip theirs no tuners i know of around my area for and obd1 tune. And can't i just tap the bolt and run a 1/4 npt to 4an fitting or would your bolt be cheaper. Picked up a 5/8id×1/2mip for the drain line.
Also picked up my turbo the reason behind using a holset is I work in a diesel shop and so I got my turbo and rebuild kit for free it's an hy35 which comes with a 9cm housing. Trying to decide on building a turbo manifold or buying a rapidspool.

Just buy a tuned ECU and matching injectors and hfm.
Where would I be able to buy them from and my thinking behind getting a chip tune is due to people use different turbos all the time so it's a variable. As not all turbos flow the same.

I have run 4 turbos, 3 manifolds, 2 engines, 2 cams, big valve and stock valve heads all on the same tune since 2010.
Where would I buy one of these tuned ecus and how much would they run not really trying to go stand alone.

Call CES Motorsports also send an email to Technique Tuning. Ask them politely if you could please purchase a NickG tuned ECU,MAF and injectors. Tell them you would be honored to have the opportunity to have the best possible factory tuned DME in the world.
Also mention you would like to have the optional "super fuel" activated.

Super fuel? I'm actually glad you commented so I would rather tap my banjo bolt then spend the money on buying the prebuilt one what's the steps on that and do you have an estimate on the price for one of the tuned dmes?

Also thinking about switching from wanting a top mount to using a bottom mount would that be a better option?

And can anyone tell me why almost every cast log manifold I find is bottom mount? Id love to run a top mount and a cast manifold but doesn't seem possible or am I miss something

Changed my mind going to only run 10lbs of boost for now. Ordering a cast manifold bottom mount tomorrow. Would I still need a new headgasket to daily 10lbs for the rest of the year? And I had a few questions about your guys turbo oil drain I have seen I'll need a vent to help with draining what T would be recommend material brand where to buy etc. And then where would I find a drain plug bolt to tie into said T or scavenge pump.

I recommend doing the lower CR HG now. You existing one is 20 years old. You will want more power before long. And it is a pain to take apart everything you just put together to change it a year later.
Yeah just bite the bullet and put a cutring in it now. You can install the manifold on the head before dropping it back on. Tapping the vanos bolt to 1/8 ntp works fine. For a drain line you'll have to figure out what kind of hose your going to use.
It's just hard cause i wanna get all the parts and do more but it just Puts it off longer and longer.

Sometimes you have to do what you can afford now and redo it later when you hopefully have more money.
A stock headgasket can work, just be prepared to fix at a time not of your choosing. Replace the stock head bolts with arp studs one at a time. You'll need to be careful with boost and AFR's with stock compressions.
You'll need a headgasket eventually. And that turbo housing is very small. Like a .55AR? You should try to get a 12 to 16cm housing if you work around them. You'll make no power at 10 psi on that turbine
.65 ar I'm pretty sure. And my origins goal was 15 an up which would work fine with the turbo but need a headgasket

A stock head gasket will hold a ton of power with a surfaced head and block and good studs. I make about 800 whp with a $30 stock gasket and s54 head studs. The issue is the compression. You can also try a .140" mls gasket, but expect it to fail in a year or two.
An HY35 is a pretty small little turbo. 10-15 psi is going to about max that out on the compressor and turbine side.
You guys realise diesels push more than 30 through them right?

Not trying to argue or anything I just believe it should be plenty if not I'll put an 8 blade hx35 on. But I'm pretty sure it should do decent not shooting for a thousand horsepower

What's the max rpm of the diesel ?
