E39 Touring Rear Air Suspension pump assy replacement

I know exactly how to replace the rear air suspension assy (pump/compressor/valve assy).

my question is about one of the steps listed in the Shop manual indicating the car needs to have the cars rear air suspension reset. I have a laptop and an obd2 usb cable.

Is there some software I could run that would allow it to do this? Or is that step just blah - hook stuff up and let the car pump itself up and let it be?

    thanks.

I've had both bags replaced at different times and never did a "reset" . I would just disconnect the battery when swapping parts out, when you reconnect it should
go to the same ride height you had before.

+1 to the two replies above ! I have had that pump out, disassembled, re-installed, control unit out to dry it out, replaced both airbags, replaced both air tanks, replaced level sensor link....all at different times and sometimes multiple times (lol...well, not really much "lol"-ing involved to be honest....) but no adjustments were ever made after any of those operations...and , maybe shame on me, I never disconnected the battery either...only the pump fuse. She popped right back to attention every time.

+2 to replies above. I have had all kinds of pump, solenoids, air bag problems and "never" did a system reset. The only reason i see that a reset might need to be done is if one of the level sensors was replaced as the resistance they provide may be different at the same position on the level sensor.

I installed a new pump assembly… Well to me from the junkyard for 40 bucks. The valve on the pump assembly for the left side of the car would bleed down overnight. Now the car sits nice and level. Very easy job to do. Besides salvaging the relay is there anything else on the pump assembly worth saving? Otherwise I’ll turn it in for scrap metal.

Thank you all for your help!

Save the old pump - there is a guy on eBay that sells a rebuild kit. I’ve yet to try it, but it’s on my long list
