    Navigation screen

When I climb in the vehicle and switch the key to the #2 position, sometimes the Navigation/Menu screen comes on and sometimes it dosen't.

Also noticed that when the screen is off and you drive the vehicle, the radio will play for a few minutes and shut off. I can manually turn the radio off when this happens and then turn it back on and it will play for a short time and then do the same thing.

If I am correct, the Navigation screen and Radio are controlled by the computer in the battery compartment?

    Any input would be appreciated.

The electronix for the nav and audio system are in the left side of the trunk. The head unit is basically a man-machine interface.

Is the car having any other electronic or electrical issues? How old is the battery?

    Marco,

    Thank you for your response.

Can't get the date off the battery but it appears to be fairly new.

No other electronic/electrical issues that I can detect at this time.

One thing I will note, after reading some in the owners manual, it talks about interior and exterior door handle ilumination. I have no ilumination of door handles but not sure if my model has that option.

I doubt that the door handle illumination ymis related to your nav issues. The battery could be the root cause as how a battery looks isn’t an indication of its condition. I’d have it tested to see if it’s ok. Also, pull the left side trunk liner and inspect the electronix. Make sure all connectors are tight.

    Thanks Marco,

I will pull that trunk liner as you suggest and have a look.

I will also check to see if fuse is gone for door handle ilumination. If so, dead giveaway for a short in the system.

Back to the battery, everything appears to function propery with the exception of the periodic issue with nav screen.

I would think there would be cranking issues if there was a problem with the battery. Vehicle cranks and starts just fine.

    Hey Marco,

    Thought you might enjoy this.

As it turns out, my vehicle has the outside door handle ilumination feature and it works just fine!

Really helps when one reads through the owner's manual and learns how to operate things correctly. Duh!

It's those kind of experiences that are humbling.

Yeah, these cars are overly complex. The techs need a PhD in electronic engineering to properly troubleshoot issues in new BMWs. /s
