Hello
Looks like battery on my car needs to be replaced.

Few questions
- Can I buy battery from any shop($) or do I necessarily have to buy it from dealership ( $$$) ? I love Costco warranty and thinking of buying battery from Costco . Any specific things to look out for( model, size) when buying the battery ? Does the general size fits ?
- After replacing the battery do I have to register the battery. Somewhere ( http://oppositelock.kinja.com/replac...ous-1681775778) I read that registration is not needed for my car. Is this correct ?
- anything else to keep in mind ?
Appreciate if enthusiastic minds on this form can respond and help in DIY
Thanks in advance.
No registration required. Just pop the new battery into the trunk.
Just get something with similar amps, size, and terminal orientation.

What he said. Another option for you is Duralast from autozone.
Your sedan is designed to accept three sizes of batteries due to the various types of engines that were used around the world. Here we only had 6 cylinder gas engines. Other markets got 4 cylinder gas and diesel as well as 6 cylinder turbo diesel engines. The 6 cylinder diesel models use a h8 battery. That large battery is a direct fit for your car, just remove the plastic block from the battery tray. It's more than necessary but the price difference between the h7 that is specified for your car and the h8 is minimal. On cold days you will notice the difference when starting. Don't forget to hook up the battery vent tube and plug the unused vent hole on the other end of the battery or you will cause rust and corrosion inside the battery compartment. Battery regestration is only for the newer models with more advanced charging systems. It's not required or even possible on a e46.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
Just ask the sale person which one their system shows as compatible and grab the the ones with 3-5 yr minimum, or lifetime warranty even better
As everyone said just get a H7 battery that got 3-5 year warranty and you will be good to go.
