How long to wait to sand/repaint 'wrinkled' paint?

I stripped/bondoed/primered and painted (~ 10-12 Rustoleum automotive rattle cans o base coat on a fender/door/quarter and two bumpers) my car and it came out really well with a nice gloss, with 30 minutes @ 40-50F between coats. Unfortunately, I had something blow into my paint, so I decided to run one more coat (~18h later(too long), temp probably around 30F (too cold) and it resulted in a very fine/even wrinkled finish.

The paint consists of sanded primer, and around 7 coats. I was planning own waiting 5-7 days (basically when it gets warmer), and resand/scuff the top layer (not to primer) with 80, 320, 400 or nylon scuff pad, then acetone wipe and repaint with as many coats to get an even gloss - I assume 3-5).

    1) Is 7 days enough time to wait?
    2) Should I wait for >50F temps (possibly multiple weeks - my garage heater just can't keep up with these temps)?
    3) Is acetone-then directly to paint (no additional primer) fine?
    4)Anything obvious I'm screwing up?

Last pic is with the 'wrinkle'.
    -Thanks in advance

In these temps id wait 1-2 weeks. You can check by digging your nail into the clear in a corner or somewhere less visible and see how soft the clear is. You will notice is getting noticeably harder within those 2 weeks. Are you going to just re clear or also re spray the paint?

The lowest you should sand with is 400 followed by 600. Its going to take you a while but it will look smooth. Anything less will have visible scratches later as the paint dries. Unless you're painting with single stage then you can get away with 400.
Also to get the best look, you should sand with a block, it will be straighter and much better flowing than if you would to sand with your hand, DA or scuffpad.

You should you wax and grease remover instead of acetone. Acetone will be harsh on that new of a clear and will cause more harm than good.
Its easy as wipe on with one towel and wipe off with another.

Also for a cleaner job, they sell a "tack cloth" which you wipe down the panels after you use wax and grease remover and right before you start to shoot paint. And right before you start to clear. make sure the paint is fully dry before you tack cloth it before clear. It will greatly reduce the amount of dirt in your clear. Its just a sticky cloth that collects all of dirt/dust on the surface.

Also the cleaner you and the gun are the cleaner your paint job. Drain your compressor of any oil/water and use an inline filter before your gun for a cleaner job.

Good Luck! Post pics of the process/how it comes out! Feel free to ask any questions!

Sorry I forgot to mention it is single stage.

I have been using a block- biggest problem is this is in a garage- so I can only get it so clean.
The paint seems to be thick enough to cover any scratches from automotive 80->320->scuffled....but I use a pretty light hand, and lots of time sanding (hours per panel) - but the wrinkles are fine enough that I will try 400 to be safe.

I will try the proper wax remover and tack cloth.
    I appreciate the info.

Also you can try to wet sand and buff it out instead of re spraying. Sand with 1000 followed by 2000. Then compound with a wool pad followed by polish with a polish pad and then wax. Since you said it’s a thin film, it might be easier to buff and that way you can remove any defects you don’t like at the same time.

I assume I can wet sand sooner - so I may try that. I think I'll still have to respray though.

That’s actually more severe than I thought. I’d block it with like 220 and finish off with 400 and re shoot it.
Itll take you longer to sand for buff and you’ll be aching more than if you were to re paint.
Kudos to you for taking on a job like that!

Finally had the weather cooperate. Sanded 80, 120, 220 then did some filling, primed, and sanded 220,400 and repainted. Have a few bits of lint to sand out, but I am happy with the outcome.

Not bad for a garage spray. Kudos to you. Sprayed some when I was a teenager, and my biggest problem was being a perfectionist....without the skill or the money to achieve perfection. last go at it, I primed it, and never resprayed. Car had about 20 coats of paint and primer by the time I was done... Im sure it still doesn't have rust. Was a 1985 Iroc Z.
