    Jon,
Were the old caps bloated, obviously bad or shorted?
How did the solder joints look?

No bloat - nothing wrong with them except that they are foil/paper type. Probably dried out after 20 years. Joints were all straight - conformal coating protected everything very well.

It was very hard to read values as the PCB coating has turned brown/red and BMW applied it liberally. That, and I realized if you remove the coating with a small exacto knife it takes whatever ink is on the capacitors with it...

    That said I used:

    • (1) 100uf 50v
    • (2) 47uf 50v
    • (1) 220uf 50v

Hm. My GM seem to have:
    1x100 25V
    1x100 40V
    1x47 ?v
    1x220 ?v (big one)

See pics, big one is 220, can't read well though

    That's really interesting - mine definitely had 100uf by itself, two 47uf 24v, and then a 220uf

Your model is different - mine was not marked for polarity, either:

    Very interesting.

You can see the one nearest camera in my pic is the 100uf, then the two 47uf are identical, then the 220uf:

As far as voltages, from what I remember it doesn't really matter, right? I can use all 50v for example and it should work?

Higher voltage is okay. I think they also grow in size along with voltage so ......
RE polarity. My very limited understanding of electronic components tells me the flanged end is pos. if two flanges it is non-polarized.

Yes, thats what I meant, larger is OK (in voltage)
5mall5nail5 pictures definitely polarized capacitors. From what I remember - black stripe is negative side.

    Thanks in advance

    All of them.
Long time no see Jon! My 10/95 540i MSport just had this same issue. I figured it was the fusible link, then stumbled across this thread. Gonna swap in my spare GM then repair the original. Thanks for the info man!

on 1/1995+ E34 General Module sends a signal to EWS2 box, if GM module is missing or dead there will be no starter cranking. I bought 1995 540i for cheap with no crank issue, but also windows, sunroof, central locks, wipers, interior lights, didn't work. So I bought another used GM module and still nothing. Then I checked the power to the module and it had power, but it was dead, then I decided to check the 4 capacitors in one of the GM modules and all 4 were below specifications. Then out of the old TV set I got 4 matching capacitors, soldered them in and it fixed all of the issues. So all this time it was bad GM module do to bad 4 capacitors inside. Even if you buy a used one, most likely it also has bad capacitors.
