DIY: RTD Shifter with Stock Rubber Boot

I've had my RTD Shifter for about a year now and I absolutely love it. However -- I couldn't figure out how to install it with the stock rubber boot in place. So, I had a pretty large hole in the transmission tunnel straight to the driveshaft / ground. Less than ideal. So I bought a new rubber boot and got to tinkering.

The stock rubber boot (oriented right-side-up) interferes with the shifter big time:

    Attachment 619103

So I decided to trim the rubber boot and mount it up-side-down. I trimmed off this piece to avoid interference with the upper part of the shifter:
    Attachment 619104

And also this piece to avoid interference with the bottom part of the shifter, where the selector rod goes through:
    Attachment 619105

    Then install the boot up-side-down:
    Attachment 619106

It interferes a bit with the selector rod but I'm hoping that won't matter much when the transmission is re-installed. I'll update when the car is back together.
    Attachment 619108

This mounting setup works just dandy with the transmission installed. I've been running this way for about 2 years now.

Sorry for going off topic, but I keep hearing about these shifters. Where can the be purchased? The internets only return an overseas link...

As far as I know, you can only buy them directly from RTD -- which is based in Lebanon. RTD has a Facebook page but I ordered via email.

I did the same thing with the shift boot. Seems to work well enough.

I see you still use the "C" clip. I would change it out for a snap ring instead.

Why's that? C-clip seems adequate to me.

Might seem that way until you realize the depth of the groove in the pin. Already read somewhere that it popped off on a shifter.

    Up to you

You could try the method that most use with the AKG quickshifter. I cut my stock boot in this fashion and as far as I remember it worked really well.

That works for the AKG and Bimmerworld shifters but would still leave a huge hole for shifters by RTD, CAE, Samsonas, etc.

DIY: RTD Shifter with Stock Rubber Boot

Thanks for the idea of using the rubber boot.

I received my RTD shifter 2 weeks ago, it took 2 weeks for Maher to ship because he had a backlog of orders. Once shipped it was in my hands in 4 days. Excellent communication with Maher, he even phoned me to confirm he had the correct shipping address. I have not been to the track yet, but it looks like a quality piece of work.

^Did you get the upgraded pivot joint using a bearing instead of a set screw and jam nut?

    ^Nope not yet.

It also seems you got the M6 hardware which shouldn't be used.

Ahh. Sorry I'm not familiar with the installation of the rtd so I threw it out there as a suggestion to try since I had to manipulate the boot when I installed my akg. Thanks for letting me know

Why shouldn't I use the bolts RTD sent with the shifter? These are black steel and come with SS self locking nuts. They seem plenty strong for the application.

Looks like Maher changed the hardware but is it still M6? People were snapping off the M6 stainless stuff. M8 is stronger (won't break) and you can use good size fender washers below the tunnel.

Yup, I used 2 fender washers in each.

My RTD shifter worked fine with the M6 bolts over 5 track weekends and street driving to and from. I upgraded to M8 bolts this off-season because it's very cheap insurance.

Sorry to revive an old thread but does anyone have any idea which boot this is or have a part number?

The stock rubber boot. Find a part number on realoem.

OCRent, tanks for this idea!! I just installed an RTD, and used your 'trim and upside down' boot trick. Excellent.

On a different note but related to RTD. Will this cure my shifter slop? When shifter is in gear, the knob moves 2 inches side to side. I’m assuming this shifter replaced all of the original shifter hardware. Even the part right before the shift selector seal?

The only thing that comes with the RTD is the shifter (and needed install hardware), which replaces only the main shifter 'lever' down to the selector rod. If your selector rod or anything past that is worn, you'll have to buy and replace.

Actually, I should add, the RTD does replace the shifter carrier. You remove the OEM one, and then bolt the new shifter assembly to the chassis. So effectively, you replace that joint, and a few bushings (one which is rubber) with a solidly mounted joint.
