    99 Fern Green - RSI Top Mount - BWs366 - 30-3300 Meth

Very detailed and long read, thanks for taking the time to view. I have never owned a forced induction car and have only driven AWD forced cars...

This is my 5th e36 m3. Ive been an N/A "OEM'R" from 2004-2010.. basically ever since dado came around from active autowerkz back in the dtmpower.net days and blew the world away with what this US e36 platform was capable of I knew I always wanted to turbocharge my e36 m3, dado was quietly my unspoken German car hero in that era.. specially since my highschool scene was submerged in turbo JDM cars and countless smack talking sessions... dtmpower was my home during this time, I didn't spend much time on BF but posted as (threepointtwom3, would love to get my screen name back but moderators here never helped me with lost email and password) ... I Never could afford the cost of this project 10 years ago, so I gave up the hope and sold all my e36 m3's during the years I had owned each one.. I got completely out of the scene for 6 years from 2010-2016 and recently bought back in after the e36 has hit rock bottom in price I found a 99 fern green coupe on dove with 143,000 miles, 3rd owner, clean title, enthusiast owned entire life with quality parts for 6500$!! (ground control coils, steward water pump, mishimoto radiator, new mechanical fan, UUC corsa exhaust.. ect...ect..) this makes e36 number 5...

I am not a professional Mechanic, Im a commercial fisherman with basic mechanical knowledge. Automotively Ive only done weekend style jobs, tons of suspension work, transmission swaps, valve covers, an engine swap into my ski boat.. ect.. This job however was way above what I've done before, and thanks to this forum, 1 year of reading and research, youtube, about 5 members from this board, I was able to ALMOST pull this job off (not complete yet). Some unfortunate parts of this job were done differently which I'm concerned about but should be ok.. I guess I wont know until we fire it up.

If you are reading this and its your first time. Do the job yourself, the knowledge you gain from this in depth conversion of a NA to forced induction is unreal. Most importantly PULL the engine out of the car, you truly do get to know the car so much better... and buy a TON of -4an and -10 fittings.. your gonna need them!

Would like to thank, these people for countless text messages and advice along the way. If your like me these are your lifelines your first time..

    ON TO THE BUILD PICS....

Heres how the car sits today, to get this out of the way now, we did do some minor/medium fender massaging to fit the monster sized turbo..

    the beginning...

moving cars around to put the m/// in its surgery bay

got this socket tray off amazon to make things quick during the job, glad I did...

    going in with the knife...

My 70 year old man lending a hand

finally removed^ we left steering column in and used ratchet strap to straighten engine to make clearance to pull over....

first time looking inside this close and personal..

    I

that wasn't so bad... followed (mybimmerspace process on youtube)

    I

Whoops on head liftoff..... (you need to remove timing cover anyway to attempt to get the best hone with stones)

    honing process...
    (click)

    PHASE 2 the assembly

Manifold vaccccummess, had to shave the backside of the throttle body housing a big to make this work but it looks clean now..

    got the headback

    achillies oil pump upgrades

oil pan back special thanks to Dan H. for the beauty free welds for -10 oil return and VDO temp gauge sender

new guides, new oil pump upgrades that was wired shut as well..

    CUTRING

IrodD - has done this install before and has a beautiful high powered precision m3, he's used with great success Indian head Shalloc on these installs so we went ahead and used it on mine...
copper spacer sprayed with permatex copper spray, tacked up, layed down first, then layers of shalloc on all sides, followed by JE gasket, cutrings... ARPS were hand tight bottomed out and then backed off just a touch.

we torqued all 3 stages the same night, plan was to idle the car the car first start check for leaks and issues. shut car off and re-torque again..

    (Timing BELOW)
We Timed and Mocked (using Bently and M3NACE youtube process)

NOTE: we tried using mybimmerspace process BUT with the cutring AND spacer you cant really use his process because the chain is already so tight from the extra gasket tolerances I went back and moved exhaust sprocket full biased left without using a timing chain tension tool or shimmed OE tensioner.. If your using a shimmed timing chain tensioner with exhaust sprocket centered it wasn't accurate and in the process of taking apart the tensioner we LOST the sure clip on the end of the tensioner... I hope I don't need a new one? still seems to function correctly? maybe someone knows the clip im speaking about... anyways ive spun the motor over and over and every time the cam blocks fall in with little to no effort so she must be good now..

(click video) this is as close as I could get to getting intake and exhaust sprocket full travel for vanos engagement.. tried it 100 times flipping the teeth and end result was this was closest...

Ditched green turbo guard and got black and also black with gold band to match heat tape.. currently looking for correct air filter..

transmission and flywheel install.. was super easy, I used a power bleeder and pulled the slave out to bleed separately, installed everything then installed slave...

Pilot bearing was a **** used a bolt filled hole with Grease, tapped bolt to fit hole perfectly and pounded..

old TOB was toast, super hard to turn... new one installed with anti-sieze lubricant, I ditched the white lithium and went with regular spline grease

install, yup my dumbass put passenger side motor mount upside down.. that was interesting during install...

porn, I used -10 used plastic oil resistant JB weld glue to fit into CCV

got catch can mounted last night with gauge on FPR, Fuse is gonna have fun routing my 3" IC pipe here

    how she sits now...

things to do, finish -10 hoses for catch can, mount front clip, radiator, finish meth install, drop car off at fabricator for all things exhaust and intercooler, tow car home, load RK tune, fill with coolant and fill with new but low end oil, start car, idle for 30 seconds-1 min, change oil and filter and check head bolts. fill with good 15-50 amsoil and let her rip on wastegate spring... once car runs build 30amp relay harness for fuel pump out of 10ga wire...

I could use advice on first start procedures here.. I didn't find a lot of rookie information on that..

I grabbed a nice m52b28 block for 50$ and plan on building this shortly down the road..

    THANK you for reading
    Joe

    hell yeah butterz

This video below is my boat and Alaska business, my dad fished alaska for 40 years, halibut, cod, salmon herring taught me everything I know... Its in Bristol Bay AK. I catch sockeye salmon and sell domestically and internationally, the company I fish for does premium fillets and animal foods, nothing goes to waste. I'm an only child and purchased some of the business from him.. our family definitely fishes to live.. during highschool I had to earn my M///s through some serious blood sweat and tears lol...

ive followed your build, nicely done and great running final product the videos are great! im doubtful of a few things I did in this build but as im entering the final phases here before the test I figured id reach out to everyone and check in..

Man, it sure isn’t haha... I must admit fern green is by far my favorite color e36 I’ve had yet! the metallic flake is... awesome.

Your car has obviously been an idol for me to finish this thing. Love how you kept yours OE looking yet a beast lurks inside.

thanks im glad to finally have this thing going towards running this month... for rod, No, but he's one of the handful of boosted e36 guys here in Seattle I know, his car is still under construction, looks like an amazing full build though.there isn't many turbo e36 cars here... but never the less its starting to grow.

rolled car outside for first bit of daylight in weeks, wired in blow through RK-MAF, built and hooked up -10 catch can lines, used 180 degree fittings, they came in handy. I have purchased all vibrant and Jegs, hose and fittings up to this point. But went with ebay US-brand hose and fittings for the CCV. I must say I'm impressed with their quality so far, hose rubber is firm and nylon seems of good quality doesn't fray apart easy.. fittings seal well, still used white lithium grease on the flares. Trimed and fitted obd2 fuel rail cover to fit obd1 manifold

Realized I made one to many -4 vacuum ports on my manifold.. ill need to source a -4 cap. I guess I figured id need a wastegate reference on my intake manifold but realized Truboost just wants just compressor housing thats TEE'd in with wastegate. Then another line from Truboost to just the wastegate. no reference needed on intake manifold?

    - Today was the first day I pushed the clutch in since I installed and bleed everything with the "motive power bleeder". The pedal felt softer then OE Sachs. My clutch is FX-stage 4 Unsprung, paired with dual mass flywheel, new TOB and Pilot bearing.. Im unsure if this is normal? the pedal rebounded fast every time I pushed in... maybe someone can chime in on this^^??

soon as the car is running I can focus on getting rid of all that -/camber haha...

I'm curious though why you chose the 366sx for your goals? Seems really mis-matched.

thanks raj, been nice following your build, that thread had a lot of useful information for rookies..

honestly I was hoping to extent the life of my current s52 with a bigger laggy build. and also end up with a turbo that had further potential then a stock s52 build. Hoping I can late on down the road, upgrade inducer wheels and build the side m52 block and push the turbo harder with a built block (2.8L/3.2 stroker).... I originally had a gt35r.86 t3 laying around with a billet inlet wheel and housing, but feel like with the s52 combined with this turbo it would spool too fast and I would be in boost all the time around town and have a drop off up top. Pushing that "small" of a turbo had me concerned with bending my rods without getting a chance to push the car on the freeway like I wanted.

That being said. I just wanted a decently laggy freeway roller that when I hit boost, it hits hard and pulls without a doubt to redline. Daily driving im not constantly spooling... Capolo's build is similar to what I wanted with his gt40r Boston green 4door... im hoping with the smaller .88 open t4 housing and the s52 paired with a good spooling manifold and proven tune it wont be super crazy laggy. hopefully full boost by 4k. not sure how this turbo wont fit that goal?

im sure you have much better idea of what im about to get into and totally open to hearing the truth ... I debated between this and the s360...

heres what I bought. (for those who may not know the dimensions) 66mm inducer / 73mm exducer / .88 AR / T4

I love my s366, but its a big turbo and will be a bit laggy, but if that's what youre looking for then itll be perfect.
When the 366 spools, it hits hard. I see positive pressure , in 4th gear, wot from 2k, around 2300rpm. I see 15-16 psi by 3500-3600 and 23 psi before 4000. It spools pretty fast for a big turbo, but I am on E85. I also have the .88 open.
Either way, I love the turbo , and if future proof is something youre looking for, then the 366 should make 700 easy down the road.

Man that sound awesome - e85 is just not an option for me in Seattle it’s around an hour away.... sucks.

What can I expect from this turbo on a stock s52 on 92+meth ??? I’m sure you’ll have a good idea in comparison to your e85 and a Stock s52. RK mentioned I’ll need a dyno session... hoping he’s able to help with this combination since there hasn’t been many STOCK s52s running it yet...

Glad you finally started a thread!

Build is turning out great. Everything looks nice and clean. Can't wait to see some videos of her running

I saw your sprockets and how they weren't completely biased to one side. I ran into the same thing when I was installing them and spent hours trying different things. As you said, the slight height increase between the head and block is probably at fault. But it shouldn't be a problem as there's still plenty of travel.

The RapidSpool manifold will spool that 366 pretty quick.. Quite a few setups paired with the same manifold and turbo making great reliable power. Love the Green

Great looking car OP, and I think the 66mm is just fine for a first turbo. It is interesting how you indicate you wanted a more laggy turbo so that the top end doesn't drop off. Not many folks on this forum say this haha, especially newbies.

BTW, using bread instead of grease to remove the pilot bearing is a win, virtually no clean up mess!

23psi before 4000rpm? Not many ball bearing, 66mm plus turbos can do that on a 3.2L can they? And your running a MBC on top of that, correct?

thank you Otis, thats good to hear, cant wait to get a dyno sheet up here for anyone else with a similar stockish build.

MAN I cant wait to hear this thing spool with your manifold. Myself, as well as others who have visited, sure have been impressed with its quality. I know theres pros and cons to both top and bottom mounts and all are great... but for my application here, the visuals and upper sound benefit was exactly what I had dreamed about in a turbo e36 m3.. On a side note, I already cant wait to move it over to that m52 block when its built... I found some serious zen with turning wrenches day and night.. call me weird but I'm addicted, hopefully I can find a home here with all these other addicts lol

I saw that bread trick! I shoulda tried it, I ate my bread instead and made a mess haha.. Hopefully I can keep the car on the road when I start pushing boost, I have no idea what im building or what to expect here.. I know the limits of a FBO m3 and have pretty good respect for machinery and understanding limits before they are pushed. I just hope this car runs, ive never been inside a motor that far.. looking back if it runs, it was super easy and loads of fun putting together.. and cant wait to learn how to build that m52 block.

BTW, using bread instead of grease to remove the pilot bearing is a win, virtually no clean up mess!

23psi before 4000rpm? Not many ball bearing, 66mm plus turbos can do that on a 3.2L can they? And your running a MBC on top of that, correct?
Let me make sure, I am positive I am getting 15-16psi by 3500-3600, I seem to remember I hit full boost by 4k but perhaps I was running a bit less boost at the time. This was a long time ago.
Yes I am running a MBC.

Hey another set of WA plates with a turbo under the hood. I'm in Kent and I have 6, 55 gallon drums of E98
Rod is a cool guy, helped me out as well. There's a few more of us boosted e36's in town just not everyone on the forums. Great build, hope to see you at the ridge this season
