Driving down 42nd street in NYC the day of the snowstorm with all-season tires. Challenging, but not impossible.

Finally got to a garage for the day. Unfortunately I had to work last Thursday and haul a bunch of equipment from Queens to Times Square. Not fun.

Digging out street parking because some inconsiderate douchebag blocked my driveway during the storm.

I got a Drone remote start installed last month (had to bury a spare key under the dash next to the EWS unit, but so worth it). Best mod by far.

Here's my, not much snow so far which is wierd, because I am from Finland, and it should very snowy. Washing the car every week or 2, to keep the salt away. Receiving my rustless front fenders anyday soon from parts car, as my is rusted so badly.

Yes mate it is a ledbar. Driving a lot in the dark. Very handy.

And very easy to remove when winter is over, just undo 2 bolts.
Main reason of the install very poor xenon's. I tried yesterday to open headlights, but the car is MY04, and have newer type of glue in the headlight that cannot be baked open. Had to drill plastic to replace adjusters and cleaned lenses as much as I could and placed new xenon's, but still ledbar vs xenon's day and night difference.

This was a few years ago n the first touring, a 00 528it, in Sequoia National Park in November. The wife was freaked out but the biggest problem I had after driving back in the snow was chain controls the AM of the pic. Which they lifted just after I got them on and down to the main road after knowing I didn't need them in the first place. Grrrr.

    FTFY.

Seriously though, I totally agree. My policy in slippery sketchy conditions is DSC on for sure at any speeds over ~20-30mph. At slower speeds, parking lots etc, it can sometimes impair the Quaife diff ability to keep me moving (DSC is far to pessimistic about us keeping moving, when in reality the Quaife will do its job and keep us moving quite nicely) and the car is extremely predictable and manageable at those speeds and scenarios so DSC isn't needed for safety really (noting critically that ABS still works even if DSC is off).

That's not counting 'having fun' in the snow, but then again, I'm too old and smart to 'have fun' at higher speeds anyway, so probably the same rule still applies.

I got an idea, lets start the debate again as to whether there is or is not "half way" mode for these cars! #justjoking #zomgnopleez

Uggh. I gotta headache just thinkin about it. Oil thread type arguments from years back. Cliffs notes:

Camp A - There is definitely a halfway DSC mode! I tested it on my car and it for sure works!!! You just hold down the DSC button until the light goes back off again! DSC is active again but doesn't cut the throttle as much! Some guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who works at BMW says it works and its a secret track mode feature!

Camp B - There is definitely NOT a halfway DSC mode! I tested it on my car and it for sure does not work! This is a confusion with features from later cars! Long-holding the button just turns DSC back on and disables the button until the next restart! Its just the same as DSC except the button is disabled! Its placebo effect! Its a 'button failure mode' in case the switch gets stuck down! DSC is back on completely! Some guy who worked for some guy who was a supplier to the guy who wrote the software for BMW says it does not work!

That's pretty much the gist. After dicking around with it I lean towards Camp B. But maybe I didn't dick it around properly and more around-dicking is required. Who knows. Not my top priority.

Hold the DSC down for about 10 seconds, the button will blink a few times and then be off. You have to power down the car and start it back up and the DSC should operate as normal, if not, power down the car, pull the fuse for DSC and start the car, power it down and replace the fuse, now start the car, all is back to normal.

To be fair, I did it on a 1997 540i and it "felt" like I was "free" you could get the car much more loose much easier without that last second wiggle when the car tries to take over.

I'm only adding this because I want to see what GG says after. (popcorn retrieved)

now...I did try that "2nd level" DCS cancel on my car and I cannot get it to shut off completely. I will get wheelspin, but it still seems to have some form of yaw intervention. IIRC the 2-stage DCS disablement was definitely do-able on the e60's, maybe later in the e46 run, and of course on the e90's...

I did not get the CampB results when I tested mine (full long press)...nor did I seem to get CampA either. (???) I did not feel as if I placebo'd the system, nor did I feel as if I removed all the nannies. Still had wheelspin after a long hold of the button, and what felt like braking intervention in long slides. Like you could rotate the car, but if you were in a turn, at fair speed, and started to push or slide, you'd feel it intervene. odd...

My '97..? Shoot...ASC off...that car was free to do what you wanted with it. It felt much more composed than the wagon ever has, super well balanced, and very confidence inspiring. The wagon is much more 'nervous'....so I do tread lightly with it.

Mostly I run with the DSC on and active because although I do like to drive the car loose...there is a time and a place NOT to pull that bullshit. Why chance pitching it into a ditch on some back road..!!?? But if the conditions are right-o (or I just want to play...) then it's game on and the DSC is off regardless of conditions. Plus, if you get into a turn and start to slide, and you can't rotate the car with the throttle you are eff'd and headed off into someone's yard, I do keep it off at times for a reason.

Quick question... Does anyone add any weight to the back for winter traction? I can see the benefit but I've also heard it messes with the 50/50 weight distribution and doesn't really add any benefit.

BTW, here's my "winter wagon". I've only had it a few months so I don't really have many winter pictures quite yet. Apparently here in MN we don't get snow anymore, just cold cold cold.

    sweet car Murph.....
yeah, you guys are like a few nice months surrounded by an ice age...
and no...no added weight in the rear.

I like the balance just the way it is. Plus..with proper snowshooz....there's not much need. I've never been without traction....only high-centered it a couple times due to some poor judgement leaving / entering the driveway...and forgetting just how low this damned car is...haha. The snow drifts up pretty good in our driveway from an open field to the west of us....

I carry tons of gear for work in the cargo area as well as the passenger seats in back. Even emptied as she is now, I like the ride and the car feels the same. (to be candid, when I load my car, I consider weight distribution)

I think good tires and confidence are the keys.

On the 1st real sweaty snow-drive, I notice when I'm gripping the wheel too much and I have to remind myself to trust the car and myself. It takes a few hours but that next day... GTFOOMW!

I run the staggered style 65's on mine so even with bitch'n tires, they are wide and will "sled" or hydroplane on slush a bit but knowing that, I just keep my eyes on the road and stay nimble.

If I use DSC, I can't get the wagon up the driveway without a limited slip diff like GG (I have one, just too scared to try and put it in)

If I had it installed, I honestly don't think I would ever stop driving during the Winter. It's just too good.

You could just pull the fuse.

Love, the mud flaps and I'm being serious. I'm also really glad you got that fender replaced. That was some serious rust.

There's a guy on ebay who has the mud flaps for $170 but claims they won't fit an m-tech rear bumper.

I drove another wagon with them and really liked the vibe they sent out. Like, "Sure, pretty like a ballerina who' s an expert at Krav Maga and has no compunction whatsoever of either delivering a triumphant display of balance and control while telling a story in dance or as soon as think about it un-burdoning you of the weight of your eyes" (too far into the psyche?) you might get my point.

They look cool against the silver.
