I'm no ballet dancer (although...don't tell anyone guys...I did take ballet classes when I was a kid. I had to go with my sister.....) but I get the Plattuspoint....a perfect mid-winter's trip into the psyche...
I could totally get down with a set of mudflaps all 'round....and my ruuf-top cargo bakset....and two big @$$ PIAA or Hella yellow-lensed roundies mounted on the nose for those dark backroads I frequent...

I'm on record as being way into the idea of the rally wagon E39. Maybe I should go in that direction at next overhaul.

I second this idea! I spent some time yesterday searching for "lifted e39" but couldn't find anything. I love the idea of a mildly lifted wagon on bigger tires. Similar to this...

If nothing else, it would make a fun winter wagon to have slightly more ground clearance and a great set of snow tires...
That's not nearly the best pic of that car...

Merc guys are famous for rally builds cuz of the factory rallly support cars. Granted mostly sedans or the super super cool MB coupe rally cars. You want to waste some internet time, Google Image for "Mercedes Rally". I'm not sure what are my favorites, the SL builds or the famous big red 300 SEL V8 sedan clones.
Some other cool lifted Merc wagons from teh innerwebz...

Intrigued!
Perhaps I will pickup another wagon and convert it into an "off road looking" vehicle. Or maybe even make a "battle car"!

Sorry, I was having a hard time getting that mud picture to load! I still don't know how to post larger pictures on here...
Why hasn't anyone done anything like this to an E39?
After reading Jeremy Clarksons review of the 528iT in Africa, it sounds like it held up quite well. It's not as bulletproof as a classic 300TD but I thought at least someone would have "rallied" an e39 by now...

Again, sorry that I don't know how to make these pictures any bigger. And sorry for the poor quality pic.
I saw this on a BMW E39 / 5 Series Facebook Group. The guy accidentally ordered E34 struts and it looks like it raised the front end up by a few inches.
I'm wondering how you would go about raising the rear...
oooh....oooh....ooooh....pick me !! pick me !!! I'm in too !!! Def down for wrenchin' and beer fetchin' !! We may have to hit my boys up at Team Sahlen on this as we formulate our evil plan.

i know you can lower the rear pretty easily. I wonder how much you could raise the rear and what the ride quality / suspension geometry would be. Pair it with possibly E34 front struts, a bit beefier tires, a light bar and it may look pretty good?
Realistically I won't be doing this, just interested in the whole discussion. I'm more interested in why no oone has done anything like this yet and why not.

once again...a meeting of the minds... I dig it...I'm game.
what's not to like.!!!???? RWD, fender exit exhaust, side skirts, useless mirrors, and a quick-release front bumper ! Winter service ?? just add some Hakk's on steelies and you are in it to win it...!
I liked those old Vulvas..! I remember taking an IPD kitted 850R wagon out for a spin back in the day. Shoot...I dropped the throttle on it and watched as the smoke began billowing out from under then fender wells and up over the hood. Musta scared the shite out of the people next to, and behind, us. We laughed for miles at how quick this thing was. We took it in on trade and found all this stuff when we had it in the shop prepping it for resale. The sales guy never picked up on all the add-ons. I damned near bought that car...

those pics totally kick arse....
I'd like to see more on how you have that light mounted. You make the brackets ?? Where do you have it wired..? etc...
I had tossed around the idea of trying to make a bracket that would bolt on where the two large bumper bolts go in to secure the bumper cover to the brace. (inside the air intake opening just to the outside of the plate bracket...). I want to mount two large driving lamps onto the front of the car as I do a lot of backroads driving in the dark. There are also two large-head rivets that you can feel under there too. I just struggle to figure out a good solid mount point for the driving lamps w/o drilling into the face of the bumper cover.
Also thought of wiring them with factory connectors and simply plug them into the high beam circuits for ease. It would disable the highbeams of course but with the two coastal light-house sized lamps I want to install who would care !! I would have to figure a way to address any potential bulb failure warning as well.
Or - I'd just wire 'em up to a circuit in the car but have not researched where to do it.

I have a bracket that is for sell here in Finland, you just take license plate away, put bracket behind it, screw license back to the bracket. On top of the bracket there is two ears, where my bar is holding. Wiring is easy with special wire set, almost plug n play. I tapped the "sensor" wire that puts led bar on, to driver's side high beam plus wire and all is working.
I can take a photo later, how it looks on the car.

Nike32..this is awesome !! Thank you for the post. I most likely cannot buy one from you in Finland, but it gives me a new idea. I think I may have some spare aluminum sheet stock that is rather thick...and a sheet metal brake here at work, so I might try to fab up something similar. I promise you I will not try to market it here in the States...!!!

The bracket here doesn't cost anything, I think it was about 10€ (12-15$)
Go ahead mate and make, and sell
I could ship it no problems there, but the cost may be big and depend on what state you are, the plate size also matters. So it will fully cover the bracket.
