    maybe...but BMW has been known to do early releases of the next year's model. not saying this is a fact with the 88/89 E30, but i have an early release of a 2004 E46.

    and to shorty in post #16, the E30 M3 started production during 1985 as a 1986 model year, not mid-88. i guess your father was got stoned and missed it.

    Just in case anyone else comes across this post via a search, I just want to settle the debate once and for all haha. June 88 was the only production month for 88 model year E30s with plastic bumpers. July 88 was the beginning of production for the 89 model year.

    My 9/87 e30 has the j code in the vin. So it was sold as an early 88 year car, at the dealers. But, it also has the short metal bumpers, not the long ones from the early cars, and the new style tail lights and head lights.

    I forgot to say it has the double rows of bolt holes like mentioned earlier, also, in the lower area of the trunk that is for the black trim
    No e30s again.
