    DIY Battery Change

I'm sure this has been answered before but can seem to find anything in the forums.

What's the deal with changing your own battery?

    I have a 2014 328i xdrive Sport/Luxury Line. Lots of electrical load.

Pretty sure the battery is getting on and the dealer is wanting CDN $600 for new battery and install.

I've read about having to clear the CSB and registering the new battery with the cars CPU so i'm a little nervous about that.

Also do not want to void and any the remaining 8 month factory warranty.

Anybody have any experience or ideas with that?

Also should i buy the battery from BMW or is an equivalent after market good enough?

    thanks

You can replace it yourself, and you can use a non-BMW battery without issue (assuming correcting sizing, etc). The coding basically lets the car know that the battery is new, so it can adjust the charging cycle accordingly. People have done it without coding, but you run the risk of overcharging the battery, which would shorten it's life. Most Indy shops can code it for you for maybe $25.

You can save money and do it yourself if you like. Just match the battery that's in the car now. Same size and amps, and AGM or non-AGM. But you absolutely need to have it registered. A dealership would likely charge an hour labor to do the job. Maybe half hour if you're lucky. An independent BMW specialist would likely charge the same, but probably have a lower hourly rate.
