I have the 5000slx quick jack and would not buy that size again , I should have bought the 5000ext or the 6000XLT for the longer length to accomadate my other cars. But if you get a good deal on a 5000slx grab it because it will fit the 8's. It Will Not hit on all the jack points but on the frame rails.

My photos above prove the 7000EXT is good to go for the E31! I also used the formula work sheet for the 7 cars I have, and so far I have successfully lifted the 840ci, 740i, and my Z3 M Coupe. The 7000EXT barely fits between the wheels on the Z3, but barely is good enough, you just have to flip the two jacks around from the arrangement shown in my AVUS blue photos. Once flipped, the jack points can be lined up on the Z3, and are still good for the 8 series too! So it seems my current arrangement is correct for all my cars (i.e. parallelogram lifts car forward towards the garage back wall, with the locking bars accessible to the outside edge).

I also had the same concerns about getting underneath a 4300 lbs. car held up with square tubing... But watch the videos, they are very stout jacks. After spending a few hours underneath my cars now, I'm quite comfortable with the safety level and work height. If you want an extra layer of safety, purchase 4 RaceRamps in the 10" height. I have a set of the 12" model, but they're just a touch too tall to fit under the tires at max lift on my car/wheel combos. Of course the RaceRamps would only be for working on the car when you don't need to have the wheels off.

Lastly, I like having the overhead capacity that the 7000 pound model provides. You can always get $100 off via various online discount codes, so the 7000EXT is worth every penny in my book. My best tool purchase of 2017!

I'm also going to get the truck lift extension pieces too, as I have an 8 series experiment I want to try. I'll do a post on that when it happens.

I like the fact that the Quickjack doesn't permanently take over the garage. But being old and lazy, I don't relish the idea of getting up and down from the floor every time I need a different tool.

seems portable, decent price i have watched the videos..dont know if there is any video, or saftey rating that will completely put my mind at ease getting under 2 tons of metal banging away at the suspension.

im probally going to get one then since im right in the middle of a full front end job with xbrace & diff, & see lots of rear end work now too... so getting room to do it is a problem with my current set up..

which power source did you go with ?

LOL I'm not that old yet (well let's say solidly middle-aged), but the only exercise I ever get *is* getting up and down under the lift on the weekends!

That said, my elderly parents were super thoughtful this year and bought me this fine garage accessory: https://www.costco.co.uk/view/p/mychanic-tool-creeper-with-pod-light-226437

Oh and BTW btnh looks like we posted at the exact same time and I missed your reply at first... I went with the AC 110V system as I'm only planning to use the QuickJack in my garage. The 7000EXT is certainly portable...but each jack is pretty farking heavy (i.e. best for 2 people to lift each into a truck or something).

Solid idea on the tool creeper, and good point about the exercise, I guess it won't kill me. I am convinced that the Quickjack is definitely the best option unless your garage is huge. Time to start shopping for a 7000EXT.

I have to agree! I was about to purchase a Kwik Lift set (about the same price as a 7000EXT) but *so* glad I found the Quickjack instead. The sales guy from Kwik Lift was nice, but they weren't willing to powder coat a set for me in BMW blue (although you can get them in the raw). After that, I started looking around again and found Quickjack. The Kwik Lift are huge and take up tons of valuable space in the garage, and are virtually useless if you want to do a lot of wheels-off work. They explained that are ways around that, but they seemed unsafe and combined with the added complexity, requirement of a running/moving automobile, and the existence of Quickjack, I'm not even sure why anyone would buy a kwik lift in the first place, especially at the $1400 price point.

    Have a look: https://www.kwik-lift.com/products/

I had ruled out the Kwik Lift already, since I think it is too steep for my 8 to get up without boards etc, and of course the storage issue when not in use.

I've been looking for a 4 post lift as well for the last year. Just haven't pulled the trigger yet. Three questions for you: 1. Are you manually lifting the garage door? 2. Did you also install the tracks for the garage door to hug close to the ceiling or were they already installed that way? 3. Were you able to get this shipped to your house or was it dropped shipped to a loading dock?

I ask about the garage door because my tracks take my door up about 8 feet even though my ceiling height is 12 feet.

    High garage door install

You have the exact same situation as I did.

I knew before I bought my lift that I needed to raise or change my garage door rail setup. So I found side mount garage door openers from liftmasters. I had to change the railing to go 4ft higher against the wall and ceiling. If you buy your lift from eBay or amazon it can be a lot cheaper than buying it from an installer. I still paid a installer to put in the garage door opener that I bought, but there are home owners willing to do all of this install themselves, I am just scared of the spring system. I bought two (2 garage doors) liftmaster 8500 garage door openers for 500$ off of eBay. It still cost me another 600$ per door for them to install including an all new railing system for a high door lift system. It cost more than I wanted to spend but my garage looks so much cleaner and I have more overhead room. But I had planned to do this for some time now. Pics below is my garage before during and after. I love the garage door openers and they are so quite!! You also can put and app (myQ APP) on you phone and open and close it when you are away and see when someone else has opened your doors. Or connect it to your home smart system if you have one.

And NO I was not able to get the lift delivered to my home. I had to go the the freight pickup center and get it. I paid a tow truck driver with a flat bed to bring it to my house. Lucky for me I watched a ton of videos on how to set up my lift and I saved money doing that my self. I used a engine lift to help move it around and along with mover wheels. But it all depends on what you want to do and spend. You can pay someone to pickup and setup your lift for you. Just asked who ever is selling your lift and they should recommend someone.

You are correct, the exact same situation.

However, I don't believe that I have room for a side mount garage door opener as I have 3 single bay garages with little space in between. I plan to put the lift in the one where the eight is pictured. Did you go with a side mount because you didn't have enough room for an overhead mount with a car on the lift in the top position?

I currently don't have a door opener where the eight is as I moved it to where the van is pictured because that opener shot craps. I haven't replaced that opener yet as I was waiting until I figure out what to do with the lift.

    Thanks, Brian

You can put a garage door opener in the bay where you have your 8 is in but it would have to be chain driven and mounted in a unusual position pic below and it will not get as close to the ceiling as you normally would. The other bays definitely look like you can put a high lift garage door and side mount units. You only need 6” on the side to mount. But you still need to run power to any location that you want to mount your opener. I chose a side mount lift because of center mount lifting unit would have a long arm hanging down and it would be hard for the door to follow the track system. Plus, the side mount removes all of that overhang because your garage door follows more of the front wall than before. A very clean look.

I could do that with the middle bay, but that is where the kids and wife use the SUV. I know that putting the 4 post lift there would put me in the dog house. I could move the SUV spot where the eight is but then you couldn’t use the passenger doors. So, that’s a no go.

The bay with the van is too short for the eight. Strike two!

I do like the pics with the odd mount and that may work. I could also add a couple of garage sections to the top of the current door to resolve the long arm and track following issues for an overhead mount.

True, The only thing I would look at is how much room do a normal garage door opener take up, how much ceiling height would you loose. With the odd mounting you would keep your ceiling clear and the rails would be a lot shorter, only about 3 ft along the ceiling .

I agree, I think the odd mounting would be the best. I can't seem to find the extension device that you posted a pic of. Do you know where I can find them? I would need an extension of about 4' to reach the unit mounting area.

After further research it looks like I would be able to use the Liftmaster 3950 and make the chain the desired length. http://support.liftmaster.com/articl...-1484145521466

Here's a link with name and model: use a 8500 the 3950 chain driven is for the roller door. But that may work fine, I am no expert.

My Christmas gift is a little late in arriving but it is finally here! I love it and so does the M5 because she now gets to be out of the Vegas Sun.

Thanks for your help as it game me the push I needed to get this long awaited task accomplished.

    Real nice.....congrats!
Those wheels on your 8er aren't quite right, especially the rears. I'll make you a reasonable offer.
