A quick google and youtube search didn't come up with much DIY on removing and replacing the gas pressure struts for the rear window and tailgate. Bimmermerchant's video was pretty good at showing cutaway of how the strut is connected to the ball joint. Another DIY website (bmw.iamgary.com/e39-touring-trunk-lid-strut-replacement also used a pry bar instead of the special tool but I'm having no such luck. Any suggestions where I can get the special tool? Apparently the part number for it is 83 30 0 492 604. Didn't see anything on eBay or Amazon. Also getting mixed descriptions on the internet and parts websites. They either don't show a picture of the tool or describe it completely differently than what maybe the Bentley Manual might describe it.

2WD, i just made a detailed thread with pictures showing how to get this done WITHOUT the special tool. Its probably 6 threads below yours...

I will cut you some slack as the BFC search function is not the greatest, and seeing your post count, im sure you are not that fluent in navigating the website.
Best of luck on replacing them, it makes a huge difference.
This DIY is pretty comprehensive as well:

This is on my list in the near future. Colder temps mean old tailgate struts don't hold.
OK - I thought I could do this repair, but maybe not. Some questions:
The part identified for my 2006 530xi Wagon is #: 51-24-7-201-468-M9 "Hatch Shock Gas Pressurized." The part referenced above is different.
I called Pelican Parts to ask questions - the "BMW expert" couldn't help.
I noticed in the part description it said "right side." I did not see one marked "left side." What's up with that? Is there only one strut to replace?
Any direction is appreciated.
Ah - you have the wrong car - this is the e39 wagon/touring forum. This ends with cars built thru 2003. You need the e60/61 forum. E61’s are the wagon version of the e60 sedan - edit - some e61’s have a power assist feature - you need your vin # - look up in realoem.com and it will tell you what parts you need

This is the closest thread I could find to my problem...bonking my head in the trunklid bc the gas struts are shot.
Anybody have a recommendation on brand?
There's a huge range in price for a pair of trunk struts Ive found on ebay and amazon---around $17/pair to as much as $80/pair.
I want to get the cheap ones from hong kong....how bad could they be?
You will be doing all of this again 6 months from now, wasting other peoples time that is... Stick with the factory pieces.

+1
I ordered the inexpensive ones at first...only to find that the socket end which fits over the pin inside the roof would not fit over it. For some reason the opening of the receptacle was too small.
I then went with the Genuine pieces. Save yourself the trouble especially since you only want to do this job once.

Thanks. I'll see if there's any NOS around cheaper
