ok so another devolpment (not a good one)
the car now sometimes dosnt start you can hear it ticking but dosnt clock over, it first did it when it was low on diesel but still have 40+ miles on the range but then it did it again last night when it was half a tank and i had just fulled up 10 mins earlier. the strangest thing is when it dosnt start if i put some diesel in it (using jerry can) it takes a few seconds ticking but then turns over?
could this be the fuel pump relay? or what?
ok so the car wouldn't start once again, called the aa who came out and sprayed some easy start into the engine and started no problem, he said the issue is with the fuel pump as there isn't enough pressure on the fuel.
I am looking at getting a replacement fuel pump and apparently its the one under the seat is this the right one I'm looking at its a 2003 e39 diesel

anyone have any ideas?
Have you replaced your fuel filter? It could be clogged. Do you know as a fact that your fuel pressure is low? Have you measured it?

Not yet no just replaced fuel pump. Two different mechanics from the aa have said it's more then likely pressure issue as sometimes when it doesn't work spraying easy start in the engine starts it.
Ok, well, see if the fuel pressure at the fuel rail is high enough. I think there's a Schrader valve back there that you can attach to. I don't know what acceptable is for the diesel.
If the fuel filter hasn't been replaced in 5+ years, definitely change it out.
Check your injectors.
There's only a few things that an engine needs to run; FASTEC. Fuel, air, spark, timing, exhaust, compression. Minus spark, obv.

Thanks for the suggestion I'll see if I can take it to a garage tomorrow and get them to test the pressure
so took it to the garage today and after a few hours got a call to come discuss it. he reckons its either the high fuel pressure pump or one of the injectors but wont know until he does a proper check next week, just hoping its not an expensive part
ok so took it to a garage today, they have ordered a new fuel filter which he says it will either be that part or in the injectors and if its injectors need to send them off to get them tested and then replace the faulty ones, looking at 4 hour labour to get to them to start with though, is this normal?

ok so took it to the injector testing place and they said the problem probably isn't an injector issue so advised me to test more stuff first before spending more money on getting them tested. one thing he did say was it could be the high pressure pump, but he dosnt do jobs like that, took it to another garage who says it can't be the high pressure pump as it runs.
anyone got any idea if it could be the high pressure pump the car has done 151000 miles.
No idea, sorry. I have zero experience with diesels. Check over on the UK forums; they'll have a better idea of what you could be facing.

so i gone ahead and bit the bullet and took the car in to test the injectors and they just called to say one is shocking and causing the no start issue and 2 more need to be replaced soon so i should just do it now. Spoke to a bm spares guy who is sending 3 injectors to the garage so hopefully tomorrow the car will be up and fully running again
just gotta wait to see how much the injector testing is going to cost me now.
ok so just been to pick the car up the replacement injectors i got didnt pass there "test" but starts up amazingly now but £400 lighter.
So i got three faulty injectors anyone know if there any good to anyone?
todays update added black kidney grills and replaced the bmw badge, also regassed the air con so once again blowing cold
