My speedometer, odometer, and cruise control are shot on my 2003 530i. I took it to a little shop and they charged me $600 to replace the rear speed sensors, which seems overpriced, but I was desperate and needed them asap. But now they tell me they want another $900+ plus because the problem is not the speed sensors, but also the ABS module. Seems like they're ripping me off because I gave them $600 for the fix, and that's what they quoted me, but now that I've paid, they want an additional $900-something for the module (for a used.) Feel like they should have to eat the cost since they quoted me wrong. Since something seemed odd, I told them I don't want it, and to take their overpriced speed sensors back. They won't do it. They said I can't drive without my speed sensors, even though the old ones weren't even working. Should I just give them the $900 for the rest of the fix? Or could I most likely find cheaper elsewhere?
Well you can get your ABS rebuilt for ~$150...and there's some really great YT videos on how easy it is to remove and replace it. $600 for the rear speed sensors is ridiculous. There's $120-160 in parts...the rest is labor. You should learn to work on your car...you're getting hosed.
Depending on where you are, shops normally charge up to $150/hr for labor. $75/hr for the cheaper options. It shouldn't take more than an hour, maybe two for rear speed sensors. The ABS can be removed and rebuilt by BBA Reman for around $90. But assuming that they are completely replacing your ABS module, used models don't even touch the $900 mark. So yes, that shop is really taking advantage of you.
Reman shop- You pull it off and ship it. Reinstall with 6 torx screws and done.

A note about DSC coding. It appears that the DSC is the only unit that holds the steering angle offset -- the difference between the steering wheel angle reported by the steering angle sensor and the true wheel angle. If you get a new/rebuilt/used DSC control unit not only will it need to be coded, the steering angle sensor will need to be recalibrated. If you have your original DSC repaired it won't need any coding mucking about.
Also, it's infeasible to repair the DSC unit yourself. The wires are almost as thin as chip bond wires, and they are welded using the same technique. Reattaching them is one of the few repairs that I have outright failed at doing.
Flat out, you are getting screwed. They raped you on the sensors and I can assure you, they are not equipped to "replace" the ABS module. I won't repeat what has already been said. But listen to everything that you are being told. Walk away now.
The smartest tech first would have swapped the positions of the wheel speed sensors cleared the faults and recheck. They should but your old sensors back in
Sorry to hear you're getting ssssssshafted, we all have at least one horror story to tell. I'm in New Zealand and I found an e39 enthusiast who has a second hand ABS module $395 with postage, just gotta get it coded by.
