No indication of chain guides being replaced, if so that makes you want to bonk them on the side of the head for not addressing that while the motor was out.

Presents well in the color and on the Apex wheels but I feel the auction price will stay relatively low due to the relatively sparse maintenance for the mileage, hopefully I am wrong!

I'm in the market. I have several low mileage Bimmers I can trade for or I can buy outright. I also have a 2 owner (I'm the second) 2000 540iT I can trade (or sell). It's a sport package car (not an M sport) with 130,000 miles on the clock.

Wow, it's been a while since I've seen a 540it badged as an M5 so openly... somebody doing that here in the US would never be taken seriously.

Yeah, had a good laugh at that and the price, but low miles and a MT was intriguing...

The only downside is that I have to wait for a good bit for the work to be done, but it's a small price to pay assuming it all works out. They are finishing up the car this week and I'm hoping to have it next week if I can get a transport lined up in time.

The E39 has always been a bucket list car for me, though I have never even driven one! I also love BMWs, wagons, and generally anything with a manual trans. I plan on doing a few small mods and enjoying this car for one of its main purposes - baby hauling! I'll post back here when I get it home and detailed to my liking

Thanks! This is my second 'unicorn' wagon. I owned a factory produced 2005 5 speed Legacy GT for several years and loved it. I gave it up to take the BMW plunge after I found my fairly rare 6MT E90. Definitely excited for this one.

Haha I have actually had multiple people say this and a few mildly serious offers to buy it when I get it home I feel like this was the perfect storm for me, checks all of the boxes and the car flew under the radar a bit. I thought it would honestly bring much bigger bids, riding the coat tails of the amazing $72k M5 Touring build from a few weeks prior.

I think you're right, but this car is basically that but better because 3 pedals That's just my opinion though. BTW, I loved reading through your Orient Blue build thread. Beautiful car and makes me excited to get mine and do some small projects

Bummer that 1 out of 7 540it's in Japan Red is so riced out and gross now... ugly oversized wheels, gaudy black roof, poorly-fitted front M5 bumper, awful eBay headlights... If I had the money I would buy that and revert it to a more factory look— matte paint is an absolute travesty.

Pull the headliner loose, before that, you have to pull the pillar panels out, to gain access to the 10mm nuts holding the roof rails on. Then you have to seal the holes, and install the roof rail delete strips. Rather than order those, I would just fab up pieces off of sedan rail strips, cut the needed strips and figure out a way to fasten them down using proper countersunk Allen bolts so that they sit flush, use the original nuts that held the luggage rails in. That seals the holes at the same time, not so hard, but enough or a pain in the ass for me to “do it when I feel like....”.

how much should I be willing to spend on a 2003 M sport touring? $16K seems a bit much... but it does have the saddle leather. I think it should be around 12.5k

Miles, condition, color? All this helps factor into the cost.

Less than one day to go. I'm suprised there isn't more action on this, being an msport with manual.
All you gotta be an msport wagon" guys must be" waiting. Currently $4200

Always a lull from days 3-6. I expect a lot more action tomorrow. The big question is ... what is the effect of a salvage title on a unicorn?

PS: People on the auction are talking about this car as a "project". It's really not. It has minor front-end damage (cover it with a bra if you don't want to repair it) and needs an ABS controller. The stuff that would be "project-like" about it (namely, things related to the transmissions swap) are rock-solid, and have been since 2010. This car is at least as ready to be someone's awesome daily driver than any other 540iT/6 that's been for sale.

People on BaT have insanely high standards... heck, when I was selling my 2000 540it it needed nothing mechanically and yet people who looked at it still called it a "project" because the paint had some dents and rock chips and the driver's seat was kinda beat up.
