that does look nice... auto is a deal breaker for me though.
I dig the exterior...can't deal with the interior... or the mis-use of the decimal place in that price.
Can you imagine all the $#!t that's about to go wrong with that car !!?? Once you start to DD that thing, it's gonna run a small fortune.
I have a line on a relatively low, 120k mile, 2000 528i sport (sedan) slated to replace my wife's aging '97. It's a really nice car...know the owner....well kept...low usage, and even less within the last 7 or so years. Momma likes it but I told her to get ready for me spending all the bucks, plus hours and hours in the garage, doing everything (that I have done to our cars) to this 'new' one. (cooling system, tensioners and pulleys, VC gasket, coils, suspension bushings, OF housing gasket...the list goes on....). She said she's cool with it...lmao....

Just saw this in the local Craigslist.

low miles but not a real m tech
So what? You guys make such a big deal out of what's an M tech and what's not,
Just to let you know, I happen to have a real deal '01 M Sport 540 sedan.... I'm going fishing....
Set the controls for the heart of the sun
Eh, it's got the sport package, M-Pars, and M-Sport bumpers. Good enough IMO. The price is too high either way, low mileage 540i's are just ticking time bombs.
Right? Who cares if it's an M-Tech or not? The minor differences in suspension are completely negated by the fact that any M-Tech with original suspension still on it is due for replacement anyways. The bumpers are a cosmetic thing that can be added to any car easily. You can do all the cosmetic/suspension changes to a 1999-2002 540it and have the same end result for half the price. My 540it is a 2000 and once I'm done with the interior and suspension upgrades, it'll be nicer than any M-Tech touring, guaranteed.

^^^ m-tech shmem-tech...
- it's just a more expensive battering ram for hitting all the chunks of ice, snow and general $#!t that drops off trucks and cars in winter....
- like dead-eye dick when re-killing unavoidable road kill....(dead animal in the road - you got no where to go ?? shoot, you can't drive over a dead goldfish without blasting it one last time with your hi-zoot m-tech bumper...)
- gives the much appreciated ability to become high-centered in 2-inches of snow....as you poke at the snow like an idiot with a broom handle...since that's all that will fit under there...as your neighbor drives by in their Subi
- is an extremely accurate tool for tagging a parking block so people unfamiliar with your car can judge how much further to pull into the eff'ing parking space when they borrow it....(despite being pre-warned
)
...and still...none of the US m-tech cars have the brake coolers opened up....![]()
I’m done with the m tech pork chops and engine cover. I will be fabbing up my own, just like JC did not too long ago, I think it was him, with some sheets of polypropylene plastic that I picked up a while back. And GG was 100% right when he claimed that the original covers are what shatter the bumpers when you nail a parking block. They are stiff and don’t give, so they break, and F’ul the cover, stupid to keep buying them over and over, especially now as they raised the prices once again.

yeah...I blasted one 'chop last month. I got the tattered remains of it refit and stable when I did the r/f wheel bearing last Saturday. Was too disgusted...discouraged...maybe just hadn't drank enough yet....to pull it off and repair it. But it blew away the mounting points on the bumper cover itself, so I'll take it off (when it gets warmer outside...) and repair the inside bottom edge of the bumper cover, and repair that porkchop with some f/glass or some $#!t. I don't feel like shelling out nearly $300 for a trim panel under the nose of the car. Nor do I feel like cobbling in a Latvian replacement part that looks more like a failed IUD than a proper fitting trim non-oem panel. Fack !!!
Agreed the phrase "rare" is rather overused, especially on CL, but aren't 540iTs "rare" in the US? Total sales of 2363 over 5 years is a pretty rare car now almost 20 years later. I wonder how many are left?
Not as rare as my 1983 Audi Ur Quattro (less than 700 imported to the US over 4 years from 1982 - 1985), but 540iTs are not super common. The difference here in Santa Cruz, CA is I do see others on the road (never happens with the Q anymore unless at an Audi enthusiast meet and even then seldom), and there are actually some for sale on CL such as the $4500 example posted above that apparently needs TCGs at that ask (seems high). Degrees of rare. 540i sedans, easy to find and rather common. M5s are not impossible to find used. Tourings not so much, but still not impossible to find. When I bought my UrQ it was around the age the 540iT is today. UrQs were much easier to find then. It still took me 6 months to find "the one" and I had to fly to Portland OR to pick it up. There were close to a dozen nationwide at any given time to choose from back then. Today, they come up one or two at a time, sell right away, and are near impossible to find. Many are bought by overseas buyers and taken back to Europe. Doubtful many E39s will become that rare but I feel the 540iT is a pretty special ride worth preserving.
