For sale is a fully-loaded completely original un-restored 1980 BMW 528i with 5-speed manual transmission. Purchased new on 6/21/1980, this E12 BMW has been in continuous use as a daily driver by its original owner to the tune of 250,000 miles over the past 37 years.
As you can see by the photos, it is in very good condition. Maintenance and upkeep of this vehicle challenges the very definition of meticulous. Every tank of gas ever put in this car was logged in a notebook. All repairs have been performed by the original owner himself who kept fastidious notes and diagrams within the factory repair manual (included with sale). The original Arctic Blue Metallic paint presents very well, with typical small rock chips denoting the age and use of the vehicle. The interior is in excellent condition - no tears or holes in the leather, no dash cracks, and the headliner is nearly immaculate. Although this BMW has 250,000 miles, you wouldn't know it by the great looks and performance as a result of regular scheduled maintenance and care.
While the car shows cosmetic wear for its age, the overall condition is on-par with similar models that have come to market with less than half as many miles. The fuel-injected 2.8 liter 6 cylinder motor runs smoothly with effortless power. This is truly one of the first sporty sedans.
Here are some key highlights about the car:
* 250k miles
* Rare 5-speed manual transmission
* Clean Colorado title in-hand
* Passed Colorado emissions in 2014 (last renewal)
* Factory repair manual including notes by owner
* Original sale receipts and window sticker included
* New all-season Michelin tires installed 10/19/2016, 7k miles ago
* Valve adjustment completed 9/1/2016
* Coolant flushed 3/2/2017
* Power windows, sunroof and locks
Known issues:
* Odometer stopped in 2005 at 222,996 miles. This is a common issue with this vintage as it is gear-driven. Because of the meticulous fuel record keeping, this was noticed immediately and mileage has continued to be tracked in the fuel notebook (included with sale).
* Passenger side front and rear quarter panels have some damage resulting from a parking structure. This can be seen in the pictures. Taillight was broken and has been replaced. Rear rubber bumper strip is no longer made and has not yet been located for replacement.
* 3rd gear synchro is worn - results in grinding unless shifted slowly into this gear only
* Leaks oil when parked
* Power locks do not work, or if they do I have not figured out how to use them
Price is $5,000 OBO. Please, no solicitations asking to sell this vehicle for me.
Last fuel-up of the vehicle was on 8/24/2017, 10 days before the original owner passed away. He loved this car and drove it for over half of his life. For his family, this car embodies the painstaking obsession he had with it which has forced the sale. If you feel you'd like to continue on the journey with this well-cared for BMW, please contact me.
