Please don't tell me I screwed this up (Head install)

So I got the head back from the shop, replaced #8 exhaust valve, and the install was going smooth, until I figured that I did not have the oil separator installed prior to attaching the head. The head is not torqued down yet, just snug to keep it from moving.

Has anyone done this buffoonery and been able to get the oil separator in without pulling the head back off again. I was wondering if I can shave part of the plastic triangular part to get it to fit in the slot. If not, its about another hour of extra work. Just got frustrated and quit after I did this.

The OSV can be changed with the heads fitted - the hard bit (from a complete engine point of view) is removing the timing covers - and you haven't fitted those!

How? The slot at the top is just a bit too narrow and I don’t want to try and bend the timing guide for absolute fear that I’ll crack the plastic and then shoot myself.

By the way, the bad cat theory you presented for this problem is not too far off. Although this was a bad valve, the machine shop told me that failing cats can cause enough back pressure and heat to cause valves to fail. Considering I got a bad Lambda code sporadically then this, I’m thinking the cats are not long for this world.

Unfortunately the guide on Bank 2 has to come off:

I assumed that as you just has the head off you also had the guides off! Well done for taking this on, especially after th gearbox work you have done - high kudos!

Well, the head is coming off again then. Its on there mainly resting with the bolts just slightly snug and nothing else is connected so about an hour extra work. Just got ahead of myself.

Make sure the bolt timings are super clean and dry then make sure your oiled head bolts are not drippy. I almost cracked my 750 block by over juicing the bolts

It happens! And I sympathize with you. I reassembled most of the engine after TCGs to realize that I forgot to put the two cooling pipes above the valley pan... You get swept up in the moment and just keep putting things back on, while a little voice in your head says "I just want to be done with this SOB."

Yea that's why it's a good idea to change it out when you do the guides. the CCV ( i think) is the one at the back of the intake.

actually the TIS specifically says that the bolts and holes must be clean of oil and debris. I don’t think you’re supposed to lube these before install. The TIS mentions possible cracks if the bolts and holes are not clean. I did the head gaskets on this about 30k miles ago using dry bolts and all was fine, the bolts came out fine during this build.

Not sure why you are pulling the heads to install that part , easier to remove the driver side timing guide than head ?

/only done 3 full rebuilds on these including m62 with dual timing chains , fun

Because removing the guides requires the front of the engine to come off, rather than just pull off the head that is not torqued on yet

I saw a thread where someone wriggled it in with the lower chain cover still on but have no clue where that thread is.

Hm, thank you. I was persuaded that the setup was quite different. Also, in the several videos about this I'd never noticed it...

I tried to remove the lower bolt on outer timing guide and broke the block I wouldn’t risk doing a half-#%€ mistake and having to start over completely

just loosen the bank 2 guide and slide the cyclone in. I remember forgetting installing that myself during guide change.
