I have a 2009 128 coupe with 65,00 miles. The brake warning light is lit for the front brakes, but there is about 60% pad remaining. An independent mechanic told me that BMW sets the light for a specific mileage, and that you can't re-set the light until you replace the pads. This doesn't sound right to me, because I don't know how the system would know when the pads were replaced. I think the wear sensor is rubbing. Can anyone weigh in on this?
You're correct - the indicator can be reset with a scan tool no matter if the service was performed or not.

If sensor is bad light will come on no matter how pads are. Also please note- if you have new sensor and it won’t reset you will need ISTA-P, vehicle tab, under retro fits you will see option for brake CBS update.
With ISTA-D there is also a procedure that allows you to correct/ adjust pad thickness.
