    Overheating? Or bad gauge?

So since it just got cold out i decided to let my car idle a bit before i leave in the morning. I got started it up let it idle for about 5 minutes and just as the needle got passed the blue the gauge slowly but visibly moved from the blue to passed the red in about a minute and a half. I dont Know if my thermostat is stuck closed and the car is overheating or the gauge is bad because i just had the cluster out to do odometer gears. If anyone knows what’s happening let me know

When you notice this problem, first check engine temperature with some hand thermometer. If temperature fine, then check cluster and temperature gauge.

Assuming an otherwise good cooling system, a car that overheats at idle or sitting in traffic has a bad fan clutch. Use the newspaper test to check the fan clutch. Did you drive the car afterward? If so, did the temperature stay normal?
