Hi guys, after selling my e36 way back in 2011 I'm back after picking up a 2001 740i sport!
Currently I'm having trouble with the hood release. I recently tried to pop the hood and couldn't get it to open so after popping out the grill and grabbing the cable from the outside I got the hood open and I replaced the cable that goes from the passenger side hood latch to the driver side wheel well (51-23-8-168-163-M9 off of pelican parts) following this guide: http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/515946
Before I closed the hood I used a screw driver to close both hood latches and then pulled the interior hood release lever and both hood latches opened so I thought I was good to go (Unfortunately I didn't do this same test before pulling out the old cable). I then I closed the hood and pulled the interior latch and lo and behold the hood wouldn't open just like before. I've read a few other threads after a search but nothing is really clear to me about what to look at next, any ideas?
Thanks!
On either side of the radiator support is a spring loaded hood bumper. Same bumper is used on the lower edge of the trunk lid. Mine were broken and wouldn't pop up to clear the latches. I unscrewed them from the trunk lid and replaced the broken ones on the radiator support. Later that week I went to the wreckers and got 2 good ones for the trunk lid.
Hey thanks for the response!

If you haven't already, have someone pull up on the hood as you pull the handle. As stated, the bumper stops may not be springing the hood up. If that doesn't work, I would remove the handle and use some vise grips to pull on the cable. I've had this happen on one of mine. If you get it open, check the bumper stops and the cable adjustment between the firewall and drivers side latch.
I don't have a helper available tonight but Ill give this a shot tomorrow evening. I hope it is these stops since I'm 99% sure my cable is working properly as its freshly installed and flipping the latches into the unlatched position using the interior lever while the hood is open.

Make sure the pins are in the up position as per the second link. That cross point screwdriver position allows the pin to be pressed into the stopper and with a quarter turn, it remains down
Yes thats the part. Yours are either stuck down or not.
Well sure enough my pins were down. I pulled both out and one of them didn't even have a spring inside at all anymore. I went ahead and swapped the trunk lid springs into their place and the hood release was functioning for a few attempts but then stopped again. I'm throwing in the towel for the night and went ahead and ordered new ones so hopefully fresh springs plus a little more fiddling will get me there.
Just rotate them up so they're taller. My hood pops up about an 1/8th of an inch, just enough to clear the latch.
