    top end tap

My 99 s52 has developed a tap in the cam area, I think it started after I did a shark injection with the increased redline?, definitely noisy in the rear area of the cam cover, took it off and couldn't find any thing amiss, is a collapsed follower common,or probable?, 20/50 synthetic,130k.

Are you sure you want to run 20W-50 in the winter time? A 5W or 0W would be much better and do less damage.

Does the noise go away after it warms up? If so then it will be that the oil is the wrong weight.

Also have a look at your cam for wear/ridges. While it can be a bad follower, there is a good chance it will start to show as excessive wear on the cam.

I thought it could be viscosity related, but no, it gets noisier when warm, still planning for a winter weight oil change, even though my oil has just 1K on it. I'm gonna pull the cover again, and build an oil deflector so I can put a stethoscope near it while running.

Best to narrow down which one, as there is 24 lifters on that car.

What makes me thinks is that the oil, warm or not, has drained out of the lifters. With that heavy of a weight, it cannot get back into the chambers to refill the lifter so it is tapping on you now.

Exactly my theory, I'll try some winter oil first, the tap hasn't gotten any worse in 100 miles.
