    Gauge Help

my fuel and temp gauges are both pinned way over to the right...

the temp gauge will work every once in a while...not often. Fuel never..

Any ideas - engine is running at normal temp.

    1. Are the related - something causing them both to be out?
    2. Temp Sensor bad?
    3. gauges bad?
    4. fuel tank float?
    5. electrical?

    Thanks for any thoughts....

    W

Clean up your connections to the temperature switch and the sending unit. Check the wires too while you're there

What year? Have you ever checked the batteries and the Service Interval board they are mounted on inside the cluster?

Usually grounding the senders cause the gauges to peg, so I would check the ground points first.

Ok I cleaned up the connections and all the wires look perfect - no change.... I did notice that when I pulled the connections from the temp sender the gauge went dead to the left...once plugged back in pinned to the right...??

    - - - Updated - - -

Its a 1985 - black on tan....really mint condition with 55k orig. so excited about it....

Sorry to be a dumb dumb...but what do you mean by the ground points.

I just got it and so haven't done much yet, didn't know there are batteries to service....how difficult is it to get at, any tricks to getting the cluster out??

Screws in from the top. Si board is a trouble area on these. I had to buy a new one. The batteries leaked and destroyed mine. They are around $200. You should be able to see if it is damaged once you get the cluster apart.

oh you didn't mention the steering wheel is in the way to get the cluster out !

This is how may last project went from fixing small stuff to full-on restoration...just keep taking nuts and bolts off!

18" M-Parallels. If you pull the column as far as it adjusts you should be able to wiggle it out. Be careful you don't scratch the lens.

Didn't think about the obvious...telescoping wheel...!

Was going to pull the wheel, which was going to get me into thinking about finding a cooler wheel and spending more money!

Trying to stay focused on fixing the problems first....!

Is your car a euro, or did you do a euro conv with the small bumpers and different lights?

    Looks amazing...

I looked up the fuel sending unit and its crazy expensive, so hopefully its not that...

Thank you. It's been a 7 year work in progress. It was a mess when I bought it.

Got the cluster out, and now to get it back in....

The batteries were replaced in 2013 - its marked on them and the look good and I put a meter on them and they have a good charge.

I did find two plugs one of which was not connected...and now I dont know where to connect them...!!

There are two of the little blue connectors that slide onto the edge of a PCB, but for the life of me I can only find one place to plug one in, so that leaved one hanging....

One has two wires blue/yellow and red yellow, the other plug has one wire that looks all brown or brown black. The only place that I can find to plug into is a little port that says Tempo...

Im afraid to plug the wrong one in and fry something... UGH...

Actually the second plug with the single wire is brown with a red stripe..

I'm guessing they are not related to the fuel gauge and temp gauge being out...maybe speed control??

Since you have it out take it apart and look for burned spots on the circuit board.

Any idea where those two clips attach? Is it possible that one might be un-used?

On a side note there is an alternative to an OEM replacement SI board, and it's better than the original.
Ivo Christov in The Netherlands offers some excellent product, and his support and knowledge are extraordinary.

Answered this on the old thread you used to seek help.

It is very possible that many connectors are not used on these cars. Lots of options may or may not be included in your ride but the harness may be the same.
